The Canton-Galva cross-country team welcomes several new faces to this year’s squad while returning just two runners.
“This is going to be a learning season for most of my runners,” coach Lyle Silsby said.
Bringing experience to the team is senior Eli Janzen, who will lead the boys’ squad and is the best runner on the team, according to Silsby.
“Eli has been training hard all summer and has come into this season in the best shape he has ever been in,” Silsby said. “His goal was to cut about 30 seconds or more from his 5K time, so he put in a lot of miles this summer.”
Also returning is sophomore Katie Diehl, who suffered injuries last season but hopes to stay healthy and improve last year’s times this season.
Seniors joining the team for the first time are Ren Dieker and Ben Young for the boys and Jacey Cantrell for the girls. Underclassmen include sophomore Krystal May and freshmen Lane Weins, Trey Wedel and Brittany Dieker.
“None of them have ever run cross country before,” Silsby said, “but all are working hard, getting in shape, and are willing to do what is needed to compete.”
The Eagles face their toughest course of the season right out of the gate, traveling to Lincoln Aug. 30 to start the year.
