Warriors aiming for WSL title

Returning starters expected to make an impact for Peabody-Burns volleyball this season are (from left) McKenzie Ensminger, Paige Lewis, Rayna Barnes, Brandee Burnett and Kaycy Gonzalez. A Peabody-Burns volleyball squad that finished runner-up in league season play and lost in the second round of sub-state last year is aiming higher this season with the return of five starting upperclassmen.

“If we can continue to improve our ball control daily, along with our experiences from last season, that should allow us to be highly competitive on a nightly basis, said coach Darren Schroeder, who returns for his 11th season after guiding PBHS to a 21-13 record last season.

Senior Paige Lewis, a 5-foot-6 outside hitter who earned first team all-league honors last season, and junior Rayna Barnes, a 5-9 middle hitter who garnered second-team recognition, are expected to lead the Warriors’ attack this season.

Seniors will power Peabody-Burns football team

An experienced Peabody-Burns football team will be led by these seniors: front row (from left), Jan Liska, Lucas Larsen, Allen McLaughlin, Tommy Morris; back row, Christian Guard, Hunter Pickens, Seth Topham, Jayden Miller and Austin Savage. A senior-laden Peabody-Burns football team has its sights set on making the playoffs this season.

“(The playoffs) was something we shot for last year, but we knew, with what we had, it would be a tough row to hoe,” coach David Pickens said. “But this year our guys are fired up and ready to go.”

Leading the charge will be a trio of talented seniors: Hunter Pickens, Austin Savage and Lucas Larsen.

“They’ll be huge,” coach Pickens said. “They’re the leaders on the team. They’re the captains. They’ve been working their tail ends off and they’ve been pushing the rest of the guys to work very hard, too.”

Leading the way is Pickens’ son, Hunter, who starts as quarterback and middle linebacker.

Cougar volleyball team aims for Wheat State League title

The Centre volleyball team will be led by seniors (from left) Carrie Carlson, Beka Basore, Anna Weber, Ellie Miller and Genesis Rudolph. They return all their starters and letter-winners and hope to finish near the top of the Wheat State League. Coach Yvonne Burhoop, who returns for her 31st year at Centre High School, hopes to net league success this season with a volleyball team loaded with experience.

“We have all our letter-winners and starters back from last year, so we should be at or near the top of the league,”?Burhoop said.

Last season the Cougars posted a 19-16 record, finishing third in the Wheat State League and fourth in the league tournament.

But to finisher higher, the Cougars will have to duke it out with reigning volleyball powerhouse Goessel, with a strong Little River team adding to the mix.

Leading the Cougar effort will be 5-for-8 senior hitter Beka Basore, a returning starter who made the Centre all-tournament team and was an all-league honorable...

Young Centre football team will work daily to improve

“We want to work hard every day and improve every day,” said Steiner, whose team went 4-6 in 2011. “I think if we are able to do that, the other things will take care of themselves.”

Heading up the Cougars’ efforts will be junior Kyle Methvin, a 6-foot, 185-pound quarterback and linebacker with a year of starting experience under his belt.

“He’s stronger and faster than last year,” Steiner said.

Joining him will be senior Justin Deines (6-1, 160), a tight end and safety who started last year and provides leadership for the team.
