The Canton-Galva cross country team is depending on senior Justin Hiller and returning junior Eli Janzen to set the pace this season.

“They’ve both been working hard all summer,” coach Lyle Silsby said. “Eli’s coming off a pretty strong year. I’m hoping he can improve some more this year.”

Silsby said Hiller’s junior year was plagued by injuries, but he hopes to get past those injuries and get Hiller back to where he was as a sophomore.

Silsby said it would be interesting to see how junior Jon Weber progresses this year.

“I’m just trying to get him stronger so he can keep that speed for a little longer,” he said.

Beyond those three boys, the rest of the team is new. Junior Helena Clausing and freshman Katie...

With a new coach in tow, the Canton-Galva volleyball team will look to their experienced players to make things happen in the upcoming season.

“The biggest thing for us is, we have five seniors who have played quite a bit of volleyball on the varsity level, and that’s one thing that we’re really looking to carry us a little bit more this year, just that leadership and experience,” said first-year coach Jake Sims.

“We’re going to combine five seniors with a couple sophomores and hopefully, with playing and practice, we can get a nice team bond with that and ride that out.”

Sims said the team’s goal is to improve from last year’s 9-20 record, which he said was disappointing for his players.

“I don’t think that...

CGFootballPreview101 The following seniors and letter-winners should form the foundation for this year’s Canton-Galva football team: front row (from left), Austin Frank, AJ Medley, Tyler Miller, Cody Peavy; second row, Nick Vogts, Devin Helton, Austin Bullinger, Trevor Unruh; third row, Jake Struber, Kolby Moddelmog, Devon Stos, Kaden Littrell. The Canton-Galva football team is banking on its returning players to give the team cohesiveness, which will translate to wins on the field.

Coach Darrin Fisher said what has been a weakness in the past—lack of camaraderie—could be a strength this year.

“This year we have a lot of that,” he said. “We have a lot of seniors who’ve really taken hold of the younger guys, embracing them and bringing them in, and having that type of camaraderie among the team I think is going to be a big factor for us.”

The Eagles lost two seniors to graduation last year who were starters, but they return six seniors on both sides of the ball.

Fisher emphasized the influence of his team captains: quarterback Nick Vogts, linebacker and tight...

The Goessel cross-country team may be a young team this fall, but they return experience that will help them in the long run.

“With only one senior boy and one senior girl, we are a very young team,” said coach Derrick Birdsell. “However, we return five letter-winners from last year’s boys’ team, so the possibility for growth is tremendous.”

One of the seniors projected to leave her mark for the girls is Brittny Czarnowsky.

“Brittny Czarnowsky will be a strong competitor,” Birdsell said. “She has a very real chance at doing well at the state meet her senior season.

Returners Heath Goertzen, Nathan Czarnowsky and Stephan Goertzen lead the boys’ team.

“These three push each other both in practices and in meets...
