PeabodyVolleyball031 The Peabody-Burns volleyball has seven returning seniors and letter-winners this season. They are: front row (from left), McKenzie Ensminger, Paige Lewis, Brandee Burnett; back row, Tori Schroeder, Sarah Hofkamp, Rayna Barnes, Kaycy Gonzales. The Peabody-Burns Warrior volleyball team hopes seven returning players will provide the experience it needs to leave its mark on the league.

“The chemistry on the team is great, and I think this will allow us to identify roles and players to play to their strengths, allowing the team to improve into a competitive team in the Wheat State League,” said coach Darren Schroeder, who returns for his 10th season.

Last year, the Warriors lost in the second round of sub-state after placing...

PeabodyCrossCountryPreview111 Zach Preheim Jr. is the only runner returning this season for the Peabody-Burns cross-country team. The Peabody-Burns cross-country team is small, but it hopes to be mighty competing as individuals this season.

“Our goals are going to be personal goals because we don’t have enough for a boys’ team or a girls’ team,” said Kim Topham, who returns for her sixth year as coach.

Topham has one runner returning, Zach Preheim Jr.

“(Preheim is) going to look to improve his times; he’s run all these courses before,” she said.“The girls are new to the course. They’re new to the 4K, since they’re freshmen. For one, this is actually her first year to run cross country.

“They’re just going to look to see what they can do, and go from there.”

Topham said the Warriors will set goals and work on them throughout the...

They are: back row (from left) Christian Guard, Matt Hiebert, Brody Kyle, Brent Jones; front row: Lucas Larsen, Hunter Pickens, Austin Savage, Wes Shaw. The Peabody-Burns football team will look to experienced players to help it overcome last year’s mistakes and pursue a league title this season.

“We have five returning starters on both sides of the ball, which should help,” said coach David Pickens, who returns for his seventh season. “We also get a senior who could not play last year due to injury.

“Hopefully, both of these key things will help us be successful.”

Brody Kyle, a 6-foot, 3-inch senior, returns at tight end for the Warriors and fellow senior Brent Jones will put his 6-2 frame to use as a guard.

Austin Savage, Lucas Larsen and Hunter Pickens also are back for the offense.

On the defensive side, Kyle and Jones will do double duty as defensive ends. Savage...

CHSvolleyball193 Centre High School volleyball letter-winners and seniors for the 2011 season are: back row (from left), Anna Weber, Genesis Rudolph, Ellie Miller; front row, Casey Simons, Bryanna Svoboda. The Centre volleyball team will look to experienced coach Yvonne Burhoop, who returns for her 30th year, to find victories on the court this season.

“We should be in the middle of the pack in the new league with the number of starters and letter-winners returning,” said Burhoop, referring to the Wheat State League, now in its second season.

The Cougars lost three letter-winning seniors to graduation last year. They finished with a 12-18 overall record.

Returning for Centre are hitter Anna Weber, hitter Ellie Miller, setter Genesis Rudoph, hitter Cacey Simons and hitter Bryanna Svoboda, all of whom started for the Cougars as sophomores.

Weber received second-team all-league honors last season and Svoboda was named to the...

CHSfootball204 Centre High School football letter-winners and seniors for the 2011 season are: back row (from left), Kyle Methvin, Trevor Hagberg, Zach Calvert, Kodell Harding; front row, Shane Methvin, Kendall Harding, Houston Svoboda. A young Centre football team has a tough row to hoe this year after the loss of several key seniors to graduation.

“We’re going to be kind of young this year,” said coach Kelly Steiner. “We graduated a good class and they will have to be replaced.”

Fortunately, the Cougars have some newcomers who might give them the boost they need.

“Houston Svoboda and Justin Deines have been working hard and will need to step it up this year,” Steiner said.

As returners go, “Trevor Hageberg has worked really hard this summer and has dropped some weight but added strength,” he added. “The Methvin brothers, Kyle and Shane, also are working hard and are starting to come around.”

The Cougars went 9-1 during their regular season...
