Written by John Giffin Tuesday, 31 August 2010 17:32In his first year as head football coach at Canton-Galva, Darrin Fisher, former Tabor College player and 2009 student assistant offensive line coach, will face three challenges this season: adjusting to life as a head coach, moving to the high school level and coaching 8-man football.
Fisher takes over an Eagle team that finished 4-5 overall and 1-1 in the Heart of America 8-man division.
Wanting to take a more personal approach to coaching, Fisher has focused on setting goals in the field and in the classroom.
“I like having things more on a personal level,” he said. “We have different goals, a lot more (of them) academic.
“We don’t put too much emphasis on wins and losses. We have certain goals we’re going to try to...
Written by John Giffin Tuesday, 31 August 2010 17:31Valerie Stout enters the third season of her second tenure as Canton-Galva volleyball coach with six starters returning from last year’s team.
Stout also coached at Canton-Galva from 1981-1997.
Stout will be looking for seniors Cayla Sommers and Kimmy Voth to lead the Eagles past the first round of sub-state. The Eagles reached the sub-state second round in 2009 for the first time in several years.
Canton-Galva defeated Olpe in the opening round of sub-state and fell to Goessel, then a Heart of America League rival, in the following round to end the season.
Other returning starters are juniors Destiney Hett, Darci Enns, Brittany Leffler and Aly Bressie. Freshman Jennifer Likes will see varsity action as well.

Written by John Giffin Tuesday, 31 August 2010 17:30The Canton-Galva Eagles will feature a young cross-country team this fall, but will have two seniors returning.
Seniors Nathan Bray and Tad Wedel likely will run in the top spots. Rounding out the varsity spots will be juniors Curtis Evans and Justin Miller and sophomore Eli Janzen.
In his sixth year as the Eagle coach, Lyle Silsby will see some changes in the Heart of America League. Goessel, Peabody-Burns and Little River have departed for the Wheat State League, and Marion has entered the HOA from the Mid-Central Activities Association.
With the change, the average school size will be significantly larger, but Silsby said running against big schools is nothing new.
“We run against them all the time anyway,” he said. “When...

Joining with former HOA mates Peabody-Burns and Little River, plus six members of the defunct Dwight D. Eisenhower League—Centre, Hope, Solomon, Wakefield, White City and Elyria Christian—Goessel was one of three teams in the new league to reach the state playoffs last season. Centre and Hope were the other two.
In its sixth consecutive state playoff appearance, Goessel fell, 58-24, in the Division 2 quarterfinals to the eventual state runner-up, Baileyville B&B. In the first round, the Bluebirds beat Burden Central...
