But Centre will be shorthanded from the outset, having already lost a pair of would-be senior starters to injury. Weber is not expected to play this season, and Richmond will be out for a month.
Even apart from the injuries, CHS had a small group of returning starters.
“We do not have much experience,” Steiner said. “But the guys have really been putting forth a lot of effort during the preseason.”
Fullback Aaron Bowman (6 feet, 190) and guard Ty Remy (6-2, 270) are the team’s only returning players on the offensive side of the ball.
“Aaron was all-league first team on offense and defense last year,” Steiner said. “He is a very intense player who enjoys hitting people.”
Junior Ben Krause (5-9, 170) is projected to be the team’s quarterback.
“We are working with him on being more consistent,” Steiner said.
In his senior season, Bryant Brunner (5-10, 160) will be the team’s running back. “He runs hard and has pretty good speed,” Steiner said.
Bowman, Remy, Brunner and senior Ethan Forsberg (5-9, 165) are returning starters on the defensive side of the ball.
“We will have to be on top of our game every night because everybody we play will be competitive,” Steiner said.
With tough games against Madison, Hope, Claflin and Goessel on the schedule, Steiner said the team will have to “step it up each night.”
Centre begins its season at home Friday against Madison.
