PBHS runners eye state return

While it may not be possible to replace two-time state champion Andrew Topham’s leadership and dedication on the Peabody Burns High School cross-country team, the returning Warrior boys are taking aim at holding on to their Heart of America League crown and making a return to state.

Six returnees to lead Warriors

After posting a 10-20 record last season, the Peabody-Burns High School volleyball team has six players returning with varsity experience.

Three of those players are seniors: middle hitter Becky Morris (5 feet 6 inches), outside hitter Jessica Gillet (5-6) and outside hitter Tabitha O’Neal (5-7).

Morris earned an honorable mention from the Heart of America League last season and will be integral to the team’s success.

Centre reloading after a winning volleyball season in 2006

Coming off a 19-13 performance in 2006, and having graduated of five of six starters, the Centre High School volleyball squad is entering a reloading year.

Coach Yvonne Burhoop begins her 26th year on the Cougar bench with three seniors, two juniors and 11 underclassmen on the roster.

“We must stay healthy and develop some of our younger players hitting and setting skills,” Burhoop said.

Short-handed Cougars will use extra effort to be competitive

In coach Kelly Steiner’s second year at the helm, the Centre High School football team hopes to build on the 5-4 record the Cougars posted last year in the 8-man Division I Eisenhower League.
