The Goessel track and field team will look to six returning state qualifiers to lead them to success this season.
Last year the boys took third in their league and the girls took fourth.
“We are looking forward to a good year again at Goessel High School,” said coach Curtis Guhr, who returns for his fourth year.
State qualifiers returning are: Jennifer Van Horn in the 4×100, 4×400 and long jump; Brittny Czarnowsky in the 3,200; Jessica Harvey in the 4×100, 4×400 and 4×800; and Tia Goertzen in the triple jump, 100-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles and 4×100.
“With four returning state qualifiers, we are looking for the girls to have another good year,” Guhr said. “Strengths for the girls will be the individual events. With smaller numbers, we look for the girls to do more individual events.“
Also returning as letter-winners are Shianne DeFreese, Shanna Klassen and Ali Buller. Buller is returning after sustaining an injury.
“On the boys’ side we are returning two of our state qualifiers from last season, John Berkholz and Laird Goertzen,” Guhr said. “I’m also looking for some good things out of Adam Meysing, Alex Schmidt and several other younger guys.”
Berkholz will be competing in the 400 and the 4×100, and Goertzen will compete in the 3,200.
“The strengths for the boys will be the individual events this year,” Guhr said. “With two state qualifiers returning, we will look to seniors to lead us this year.
“There are also several others who are looking to have a strong year.”
