The Goessel girls’ basketball squad returns 70 percent of its scoring from last season in seniors Alex Hiebert, Jessica Harvey and Johanna Hoffman.

All three have been varsity starters since their sophomore year, bringing valuable experience to a team with several newcomers as well.

Goessel welcomes seven freshmen who won the league title in junior high last year.

“I’ve been impressed with all of them,” said returning coach Ryan Hoopes. “We have some young ones who are going to have to step up. So that’s kind of exciting.”

The roster is shaping up to be guard-heavy, with only one post player (Hiebert) returning for the Bluebirds. The other post players are underclassmen.

“We’re tall, but we’re tall guards,” Hoopes said. “We’ll see how we match up with teams. I think we can guard teams, because we’re long and lanky, but we’re not necessarily post (players).”

Hoopes said the team’s strongest point so far is its chemistry, which began when the girls played together this summer and has continued into the season.

“We don’t have any egos,” he said.

It’ll take a team effort in a competitive league that includes Wheat State challenger Centre, who returns almost everyone from last year’s state-qualifying team.

“They’ll be one of the better ones,” Hoopes said, but added that he hoped Goessel would be in the top half of the league as well.

“I think we can be right in the mix for one, two, three if we play to our potential,” Hoopes said.

“There’s a lot of unknowns, because we’re so young and we don’t know how they’ll do. But they’re looking good right now so we’ll see.”

The Bluebirds are scheduled to host Inman Nov. 30 to begin their season, with tipoff at 6 p.m.
