CGHS girls will walk a thin line this season

Canton-Galva girls? coach Barry Fritz knows the ball is going to have bounce just right if his team is going to have a successful season this winter.

For Fritz, 49-80 in seven years at CGHS and 274-145 for his career, that means staying away from injuries, foul trouble, sickness, turnovers and giving up offensive rebounds.

That?s a tall order.

Key to this year?s team are returning starters Kimmy Voth, a 5-foot, 4-inch guard, and Cayla Sommers, a 5-10 post. Voth averaged five points and two rebounds per game while Som?mers contributed four points and five rebounds per outing.

Fritz sees guard play as the team?s strength. Three juniors are most likely to join Voth in the battle for playing time at that position: Scarlet Gagnebin (5-4), who averaged two points and one rebound per game, Makenzie Farnham (5-9), who contributed two points and two rebounds per contest, and Darci Enns (5-8), who averaged two points and two rebounds.

Another junior, Addi Marston (5-8), should contribute in the post this season. She averaged two points and two rebounds last season.

The Eagles finished 6-16 overall and 1-11 in the Heart of America League a year ago. They made it to the sub-state semifinals at year?s end.

This current squad will need to overcome weaknesses Fritz perceives in experience, depth and scoring to improve on that mark in a revamped lineup of teams in the HOA.

Joining the Eagles this season are Bennington, Ell-Saline, Berean Academy, Hutchinson Trinity, Inman, Marion, Mound?ridge, Sedgwick and Remington.

Berean made it to the Class 2A state semifinals last year and finished the season with a 21-4 record.

Canton-Galva will open the 2010-11 campaign Friday at home against Elyria Christian School.
