A young Centre football team hopes to gain ground this year under the leadership of coach Kelly Steiner.

?We want to work hard every day and improve every day,? said Steiner, whose team went 4-6 in 2011. ?I think if we are able to do that, the other things will take care of themselves.?

Heading up the Cougars? efforts will be junior Kyle Methvin, a 6-foot, 185-pound quarterback and linebacker with a year of starting experience under his belt.

?He?s stronger and faster than last year,? Steiner said.

Joining him will be senior Justin Deines (6-1, 160), a tight end and safety who started last year and provides leadership for the team.

Other returning starters include Houston Svoboda, (5-6, 155) a half-back and safety with leadership skills and good speed, and Chad Mueller (5-11, 165), a guard and linebacker.

?(Mueller?s) gotten stronger over the summer,? Steiner said.

Rounding out the group is newcomer Justin Bina (5-9, 155), a sophomore whom Steiner said worked hard in the weight room over the summer and is expected to help on the line.

?Last year we were very young and to an extent we will still be young this year with only five seniors,? Steiner said. ?I expect us to be competitive this year. ?

Steiner said their district, which includes Hartford, Flint Hills and Madison, is one of the toughest in eight-man football.

?Every week we will have to play solid football,? he said.

The Cougars will kick off their season Aug. 31 with a home game versus Goessel.
