Jenny Loyd, assistant coach for three years, will ascend to the helm of a young Eagles volleyball team this year.

?We graduated five senior players that had been the backbone of the Canton-Galva team for the past several seasons,? Loyd said.

?We have no returning senior players for this season, but we do field a solid junior class of seven hardworking young ladies that will have the opportunity to step up and lead our team.?

Heading that junior class are returning starters Jennifer Likes at the middle blocker position, Erika Smith as an outside hitter and Betsy Shobe as libero.

The Eagles also bring back three returning letter-winners in setter/hitter Lauren Ballantyne, setter/hitter Lindsey Unruh and server/back-row passer Mikayla Baldwin.

Loyd said the team has a handful of underclassmen who show promise and will be competing for varsity time.

?We are working to improve our defense and become a scrappy team that fights for each point,? Loyd said. ?As one of the smallest schools in the Heart of America league, every outing is a tough match for us.

?We are determined to work hard, build our mental toughness with a never-die attitude, improve every week and hopefully surprise some teams.?

The Eagles were scheduled to travel to Centre for a triangular Aug. 28 that includes Inman. Action begins at 4 p.m.
