A pin at 215 pounds by sophomore Ronnie Davis sealed a 34-33 win for the Trojans. With Hillsboro up by just one point heading into the final two weight classes, Davis pinned Cody Irons at 1:10 of the second period. Irons dominated the opening period, leading 7-2. But Davis opened the second period with a take-down and then eventually pinned Irons. Hillsboro did not have a wrestler at 275 pounds, giving Council Grove an automatic six points. But Hillsboro had enough points to hold on for the win. Chuck Bina elevated the Hillsboro lead to seven points with a 14-6 win over Stacey Lee. After a tie in the first period at 5-5, Bina outscored Lee 9-1 the rest of the way to earn Hillsboro four points. The Trojans then led 28-21. But at 189 points, Wade Sorensen was pinned by Tony Tummons early in the third period, making the match 28-27 heading into Davis’s match. Hillsboro opened with a loss at 103 pounds by senior Michael Penner, who was defeated by Ben Wright 7-5. Wright dominated the match throughout, but Penner earned a near fall in the final period to make the match interesting. Freshman Bri Ratzlaff was then pinned at 112 pounds by James Gleason at 1:31 in the first period, putting Hillsboro down 9-0. After both team skipped 119 pounds, John Sims got Hillsboro on the board with a narrow victory, 8-7 over Chris Harrell. Sims trailed by a point going into the final period, but came away with four points off two reversals, and won the match for the Trojans. Carson Greenhaw came up with a win at 145 pounds, using a third-period reversal to escape with a 6-4 win. Ryan Jilka won with a pin over John Tischhauser at 0:56 of the third period. Hillsboro returns to action Saturday at the Southeast of Saline Tournament.
