Open weight classes proved a detriment to the Marion wrestling team at the Marion County Duals Friday, resulting in an eighth-place team finish.
The Warriors won duals with Leon Bluestem and Republic County, losing to Chanute, Clay Center and Riley County.
“Our dual scores were close all night, but we just didn't have enough fire power when we went up against the teams that were full,” said coach Chad Adkins.
“We beat the teams we were supposed to beat and fell short against the teams that were full.”
He said the Warriors are an inexperienced team and he expects to have setbacks throughout the season, especially competing with very strong teams like Marion faced Friday.
Weighing in at 113 pounds, Marion’s Beretta Janzen went 3-2.
Remington Putter (120) was undefeated at 5-0, Eric Regnier (126) went 2-3, Brayden Putter (138) went 4-1 and Luke Steele (145) went 1-4.
Brody Carroll was undefeated at 5-0 in the 152-pound weight class. Derrick Dvorak (160) went 1-4, Zac Lewman (170) went 3-2 and John Nordquist (195) went 4-1.
Evan Slater was 5-0 at 220 pounds, and Adam Kjellin went 3-2.
In the junior varsity matches, Zac Dvorak went 3-0, Dylan Cochran went 1-1 and Jacob Smith was 0-2.
“I was very proud of the way our kids competed,” Adkins said. “We just have to keep getting better.”
Coming —The Warriors are scheduled to compete at the Halstead Invitational Jan. 11-12, with matches beginning at 9 a.m.
