DSC0088 Jacob Harper draws a foul and would go on to make one of two from the line in the second quarter against Hutch Trinity. Harper led the Warriors with 24 points in Marion’s 54-38 win. Judging by the final score, one might assume the Marion boys’ game against Hutchinson Trinity Tuesday was never close.

But the Warriors trailed at halftime, and after trailing by six to open the second half, scored more points in the third quarter than the first half combined to run away with a 54-38 victory to end the regular season.

It took time for the Warriors to get rolling. Marion held a narrow, 10-9, lead after the first quarter. But the Celtics surged to a 15-10 lead with 3:52...

Two of Marion’s five state wrestling contenders earned first-round victories at the 2013 Class 3-2-1A state wrestling tournament in Hays.

“I am very proud of our boys,” coach Chad Adkins said. “The competition was very good, and we wrestled tough, but we just weren’t as sharp as we needed to be.

“We didn’t adjust very well to being snowed in—that is my fault,” he added. “We wrestled flat.”

Leading the way for Marion was Brody Carroll (152 pounds) and Evan Slater (220 pounds), who each earned 2-2 records in their respective weight classes.

Carroll (37-2) opened the tournament by pinning Jacob Stewart of Bennington at 3:30, but then dropped a 4-3 decision to Kade Brown of Oberlin-Decatur...

Bina grabbed the rebound for two points as Hillsboro surged to a 30-2 lead late in the second quarter in a game the Trojans won, 55-20. Hillsboro secured a share of the Central Kansas League title and an 18-2 regular-season record with a 55-20 runaway victory at Kingman last Tuesday.

The Trojans more or less settled the outcome in the opening quarter. Fueled by a defense that contributed to 12 Kingman turnovers, the Trojans made nine of 16 shots on the other end of the floor to lead 21-2 at the first break.

The Eagles scored their first basket 24 seconds into the game, then didn’t score again until 1:04 remained in the first half—about a 14-minute drought. By then Hillsboro had 30 points on the board for a 26-point halftime lead.

“I was really pleased with how the girls played today,” coach Nathan Hiebert said. “We changed up some defenses in the first...
