After suffering a homecoming loss to Bennington a week prior, the Marion boys went on the road to face the Bulldogs a second time Friday looking for a different outcome.

But Marion let a first-half double-digit lead slip away, and the Bulldogs surged to a 12-point, 67-55, victory.

The Marion offense found its spark to open the game, capitalizing on Bennington missed shots to lead 15-8 at the end of the first quarter.

“I thought we came out with more aggressiveness and attack in mind...

It wasn’t easy to explain how a three-point halftime deficit turned into a 58-35 drubbing Friday at Haven.

Hillsboro boys’ coach Darrel Knoll said it as well as anybody could: “They just got on a roll and we didn’t make the right plays to stop that roll.”

The second-half stumble jeopardized the Trojans’ hopes for a home game in the first round of sub-state. Going into the evening, Marion had clinched the No. 1 seed, but each of the next four teams—including Hillsboro and Haven—were sporting seven losses. Only three of those teams will play at home next week.

The first half was a game you might expect from a matchup of teams with identical records. Hillsboro got off to a 5-2 start before falling behind 12-11 on a...

RegWrMHSLewman725 Marion’s Zac Lewman grabs the ankle of Taylor Nuss of Herington in an effort to take him to the mat during their consolation-bracket match. Lewman went on to register a 5-2 decision over Nuss. Lewman finished one match short of qualifying for state. Five Warrior wrestlers qualified for state at the Class 3-2-1A regional wrestling tournament at Fredonia Friday and Saturday, propelling the Warriors to a fourth-place team finish with 118.5 points behind Fredonia (170.5), Cherryvale (136) and Caney Valley (128).

“We wrestled very well,” coach Chad Adkins said. “We have the ability to win state medals in Hays.

“We just have to go be aggressive and wrestle our style. To win a state championship, we will have to wrestle the best tournament of the year.”

Senior Brody Carroll paved the way for Marion by winning the 152-pound weight class. Sophomore Beretta Janzen placed second at 113, while senior Evan Slater placed third at 220. Senior Eric Regnier and sophomore Adam Janzen...

HHSgbHavenBinaShot673 Hillsboro’s Danae Bina shoots over Haven’s MaKayla Stucky during the first half of Hillsboro’s 46-39 victory. Bina contributed eight points to the win. The Hillsboro girls took a huge step toward at least a share of the Central Kansas League crown, as well as securing the top seed in next week’s sub-state tournament, with a 46-39 win at Haven Friday night.

The Trojans came in tied with Hesston for the league lead at 6-1 and sporting a 16-2 season record. Haven was a game back in league play at 5-2 and 15-3 overall. What’s more, both teams are assigned to the sub-state tournament in Hillsboro and were vying for the top seed.

The two teams were neck and neck in the early going, but with Hillsboro leading 9-8, Addie Lackey scored three unanswered baskets on nice drives into the lane. Danae Bina followed with a steal and a basket. Suddenly the Trojans led 17-8 as the first quarter...
