MHS softball team wins 3 of 4 games

The Marion softball team played two of three scheduled doubleheaders last week, with the already-rescheduled Canton-Galva games being postponed again because of weather.Trinity Catholic—Marion traveled to Trinity Catholic Friday and split the doubleheader.

HHS track teams in top six at Halstead

Competing in its first large meet of the season, the Hillsboro boys’ track team placed fifth among 15 teams and the girls placed sixth among 13 teams at that Conrad Nightingale Invitational at Halstead Friday.For the boys, Shaq Thiessen won two gold medals with season-best distances in the high jump (6 feet, 3 inches) and long jump (22-3). Josh Richert won the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 7.33 seconds.
Winning silver for Hillsboro was Tyler Proffitt, who cleared 12-6 in the pole vault.
Three Trojans claimed bronze medals: Avery Franz in the long jump (19-51⁄2) and triple jump (40-11⁄2), and Richert in the 1,600 (4:55.16).
Marion won the team competition with 86 points while Hillsboro finished with 68.

Lovelady leads MHS golf team at C. Grove

The Marion golf team traveled last Monday to Council Grove, where Hogan Lovelady led the Warriors with a 91 for 10th place.“The team played well from tee to green but left their putters at home,” coach Thane Schwartz said. “It was cold, with drizzle and a north wind—perfect golf weather if you live in Wales.”
Also competing for Marion were Jared Hague with a 101, Brant Stephenson with a 125, and Dylan Goebel—who withdrew with a bad wrist, according to Schwartz.
“Jared Hague improved upon his drives, Dylan Goebel is finding his short game again, and Brant Stephenson is still looking for his putter,” Schwartz said.

Harry Faber’s No. 1 singles title helped the Hillsboro tennis team to a fourth-place finish in the eight-team Trojan Invitational Friday at the Sports Complex.The tournament had been postponed Tuesday because of weather.
Faber won his first title by defeating Blecha of Neodesha 8-0, David Kitzinger of Hesston Black 8-2 and Collin Martin of Hesston Red 8-4.
“Harry should feel good about how well he played,” coach Stuart Holmes said. “It is tough to win a tournament, so special congratulations to him. I thought Harry did an especially good job of adapting to the strong crosswind and still played excellent tennis on a consistent basis.”

Weather factors caused the Marion track and field team to take part in one of two scheduled meets last week.Halstead—With Sterling’s CKTL meet canceled last Tuesday, the Warriors traveled Friday to Halstead for the Conrad Nightingale Invitational.
“We had a good meet,” coach Grant Thierolf said. “The boys’ team barely hung on for a win, with our throwers and field event people once again leading the way.”
The Warrior boys claimed first place among 15 schools with 86 points ahead of Berean Academy (81) and Hutchinson-Trinity (76).
