Lundy leads MHS golf at Sacred Heart

The Marion golf team placed seventh at the Sacred Heart Invitational in Salina Friday with a score of 402.

Trinity Catholic won the invitational with a score of 350.

Wiley Lundy led the way for the Warriors with an 18-hole score of 92 for 12th place.

Also competing were Hogan Lovelady (99), Dylan Goebel (105), Jared Hague (106) and Brant Stephenson (120).

Trojan golf fourth at Sacred Heart

Hillsboro’s golf team finished fourth at the 10-school Sacred Heart Invitational Friday in Salina.

The Trojans finished with a team score of 387, trailing Trinity Catholic with 350, Sacred Heart with 372 and Bennington with 373.

Evan Ollenburger medaled by finishing seventh individually with an 88, 13 strokes behind the winner, Brooks Brown of Sacred Heart.

Also competing for Hillsboro were Andrew Meier with a 90, Graham Pankratz with a 102 and Phillip Ediger with a 107.

“Considering our limited practice time due to weather, I’m pleased by the fact that all four of these guys continue to improve,” coach Scott O’Hare said.

Trojan tennis team third at Sterling

The Hillsboro tennis team placed third in a quadrangular Friday at Sterling one day after completing a weather-delayed quad at Circle.

Sterling’s varsity team won Friday’s meet with 10 points, followed by Hesston (7), Hillsboro (4) and Sterling’s B team (2).

Daniel Gray, playing No. 1 singles, lost 8-2 to Zack Brashear of Sterling A and 8-5 to David Kitzinger of Hesston before defeating Brian Walker of Sterling B, 8-7 (10-8).

In No. 2 singles, Tyler Funk lost 8-7 (1) to Shane Wheeler of Sterling A, defeated Andrew McPherson of Sterling B, 8-7 (10-8) and lost 8-4 to Trey Toews of Hesston.

MHS boys’ track 2nd of 11 at Smoky Valley

The Marion track and field teams sent athletes to Smoky Valley and Goessel Friday as the Goessel CKTL meet scheduled for Tuesday was postponed because of weather.

Smoky Valley—The Warrior boys claimed second place in a field of 11 schools with 76 points behind Sacred Heart (136).

The girls, meanwhile, finished seventh with 43 points. Concordia won the meet at 112.

“The Smoky Valley meet was a great learning experience for us,” coach Grant Thierolf said. “We did some things very well, and we found out that we have a whole lot of work to do in the coming weeks.”

For the boys, Zach Hammond paved the way by winning the pole vault (12 feet, 1 inch).

HHS softball team sweeps Kingman

HHSsbKingLucero681 Kennedy Lucero steals third in the fifth inning of Game 1. She scored when the throw got past the third baseman. The Trojans defeated the Eagles 13-2 and 8-0 to improve to 5-1 for the season. The Trojans were scheduled to play Sterling Tuesday, then have doubleheaders scheduled with Smoky Valley on Thursday and Canton-Galva on Friday. Sophomore Julie Sinclair pitched a three-hit shutout to lead the Hillsboro softball team to an 8-0 victory and sweep of its doubleheader Friday at King­man.

Combined with a 13-2 victory in Game 1, the Trojans are now 5-1 for the season.

Following a five-inning run-rule performance in Game 1, the Trojans struggled to score early in Game 2. But a Bradli Nowak double with one out in the fourth inning sparked a six-run burst that put the game firmly in Hillsboro’s control.

Madison Klein drove in Nowak with a single, then Sinclair doubled to score Klein. Emily Jost contributed a single and Kennedy Lucero a double to fuel the fire.
