CentreThe Cougars finished second to Hope at the Eisenhower League volleyball tournament at Hope.
Centre, the fourth seed, defeated fifth seed Flint Hills (25-17, 25-14) and sixth seed St. Xavier (25-9, 25-12) before losing to top seed Hope (23-25, 9-25).
In bracket play, Centre defeated second seed Wakefield (26-28, 25-22, 25-16) to earn a second shot at the tournament hosts in the title game. Hope defeated the Cougars a second time to secure the league crown.
Leann Pankratz totaled 42 kills, an average of 3.8 per game. Amy Hajek made good on just shy of 84 percent of her attempted sets to set up 29 kills on 110 assists, an average of 10 assists and 2.6 for kill per game.

The Hillsboro volleyball team didn’t win the top prize at the always-competitive Canton-Galva Invitational on Saturday. But coming home with a 4-1 record, a third-place finish and two wins over Hesston was nice consolation.

Playing in one of the state’s strongest leagues for girls’ tennis, the Hillsboro Trojans placed fifth among 10 teams competing at the Mid-Central Activities Association league meet Saturday at Sterling.The Trojans, who finished with 46 points, trailed co-champions Wichita Collegiate and Hesston with 82 points apiece, Ellinwood with 59 and Smoky Valley with 48.
Trailing Hillsboro were Hoisington (40), Sterling (26), Nickerson and Lyons (21) and Haven (0).
