Lyons holds off Marion boys 62-51

A slow start doomed the Marion High School boys to a 62-51 loss at Lyons Friday.

Apart from an efficient double-double from Luke Gordon and a 17-point night from Calvin Jeffrey, bright spots for the Warriors were hard to come by.

“It seemed for every step we took forward, we went backward two steps,” coach Rex Ostmeyer said.

The Trojans nailed 16 of 20 free-throws in the fourth quarter to subdue the Warriors, 57-44, and claim a measure of payback for the 10-point loss to Marion exactly one week earlier during the Trojan Classic. The win kept Marion undefeated in league play at 3-0 (6-6 overall) while Hillsboro (5-7) dropped to 2-1 in the MCAA.

The Trojans had trimmed a 41-33 Marion lead at the start of the fourth quarter to a 46-44 margin when Amy Neufeld drained a 3-pointer from the right corner with 3:35 left in the contest.

Marion tops Nickerson

The Marion High School wrestling squad handled Nickerson this week, with Nickerson winning only two matches in a 42-12 rout.

The Warriors won four open matches: Randy Regnier at 112 pounds, Levi Anderson (140), Trevor Foth (171) and Mark Kukuk (189).

Marion also won three matches on the mat: Cody Wildin (125) pinned Marshall Foster, Dillon Wildin (135) pinned Casey McConnell, and Derek Riggs (285) pinned Chris Kane.

Darius Barnes defeated Galen Funk in the 130-pound weight class, and Dylan Helms (160) beat Hank Collett in the Marion losses.

Coming—Marion hosts a double dual featuring Chase County, Eureka and Remington Thursday and travels to Onaga Friday.
