HHS splits at Halstead

For the second straight week, the Hillsboro volleyball team split its matches at a triangular where prospects for a sweep were high.This time the Trojans (10-3) were competing Sept. 23 at Halstead (5-13), where they lost to Smoky Valley (5-13), 28-26, 18-25, 23-25, then turned around and beat the host team, 25-18, 22-25, 25-13.

PBHS takes 2nd at home meet

The Peabody-Burns High School boys cross country team placed second at its annual home meet Sept. 18. Marion placed third.Both teams participated at the Marion Invitational Sept. 25.
Marion—Jaclyn DeForest (16th, 18:20) was the Warrior girls onlyindividual medalist, and injuries prevented Marion from fielding agirls team. Anna Laurin (28th, 19:40), Jessie Taylor (19:56, 31st) andBridgett Lundy (36th, 20:06) also ran.
On the boys side, MHS wasled to a 103-point day by medalists Ryan Jones (third, 18:51), LouisHolt (11th, 19:28) and Andrew Shipman (18th, 20:13).
Peabody-Burns—Aaron Topham (4th, 18:55) and Kendall Wiebe (6th, 18:58) led PBHS to a 74-point finish.

Centre—The Cougars lost a competitive game against Wakefield 39-28 Friday. After Bryant Brunner scored on a 9-yard pass from Ben Krause, and Krause converted the 2-point run, Preston Cannizzo threw back-to-back touchdown passes: one a 59-yarder to Brandon Munger, the other a 33-yarder to Jacob Vernnon.Centre trailed 24-8 at halftime but rallied in bang-bang fashion, scoring twice in 37 seconds. First Krause hammered in a 1-yard run, then Brunner scooped up a fumble, returning it eight yards for the score.
The conversion pass failed after Krause’s score, but Brunner hit Krause after the second, making it 24-22 with 7:22 left in the third.

Marion hosted its annual invitational Thursday at Marion County Lake, with the Warrior boys scoring 63 points and placing second to Andover Central (49). None of the county schools fielded a girls team, but Marion’s Jaclyn DeForest (11th, 17:25) and Peabody-Burns’ Lauren Pickens (13th, 17:33) medaled.
The Marion boys edged third-place Peabody-Burns (65) by a slim margin, while Canton-Galva (202) placed eighth on the boys side.

Mueller-led Hillsboro boys take 2nd

The Hillsboro boys finished as the runners-up in a 14-team field at the Southeast of Saline Invitational cross-country meet Tuesday, Sept. 23.
The Trojans accumulated 85 points to place second to Berean Academy with 75 and ahead of Sterling in third with 111.
Setting the pace for the Trojans was Nicholas Mueller, who covered the 5-kilometer course in 17 minutes, 57 seconds to finish fifth among 103 runners.
Nathan Vogel followed with a personal-best time of 18:17 to place 11th. Next in line for HHS were Robbie McClelland (18:39, 17th), Brandon McMillen...
