Hillsboro derails Herington, 48-6

Southeast of Saline forced five Marion turnovers and defeated the Warriors 26-12 Friday in Marion.

After a scoreless first quarter, SES capped an 18-play drive with a 16-yard touchdown run by Bryant Beneke four seconds into the second quarter.

Trailing by six, Marion fumbled the ball back to SES, and Beneke hammered in a 1-yard run, and added a 2-point conversion for a 14-0 Trojan lead with 10:00 to play before halftime.

—Lauren Pickens and the Warrior boys team both qualified for state at the Meade Regional Saturday.

Pickens placed fifth with a time of 18:03.

“Lauren ran a good race and looked strong throughout,” coach Kim Topham said. “She is excited about returning to state this year and looks to improve on her place over last year.”

Pickens placed 16th in 2007.

Aaron Topham (sixth, 18:31) and Kendall Wiebe (seventh, 18:43) led the boys team to a third-place finish at Meade and a berth at Wamego.

Efforts by Josh Klarmann (11th, 19:15), Sheldon Wiebe (13th, 19:18), Curtis Frederick (23rd, 20:22), Seth Methvin (37th, 21:52) and Chris Schafer (40th, 22:10) were also essential to the team’s qualification.

Goessel

—The Bluebirds defeated Waverly (25-16, 25-10) and Pretty Prairie (25-21, 27-25) and will return to Hays for the 1A state volleyball tournament.

The Bluebirds topped Burrton (25-9, 25-13) and Hutchinson Central Christian (25-21, 25-21) Oct. 21.

Up next, Goessel is scheduled to play in Hays at 4:30 pm, 5:30 pm and 8:30 p.m. during pool play Friday. Saturday's matches will begin at 2:00 pm for 1A qualifiers from pool play.

Goessel vs. Canton-Galva

—The Bluebirds defeated the Eagles 68-18 Friday in Goessel.

On the first possession of the game, the Bluebirds forced Canton-Galva to punt; Goessel scored two offensive plays.

Goessel led 16-0 at the end of the first quarter, and scored again leading off the second quarter. Canton-Galva responded by taking the ensuing kickoff 75 yards for its first score, but trailed 18-6.

The teams traded touchdowns again, and Goessel ended the half with a kick return touchdown of their own, and led 40-12 at the half.

The Bluebirds scored twice in the third period, but the Eagles scored their second kick return touchdown of the night in reply.
