Competing at the Onaga Dual Tournament Friday, the Marion wrestling team came up with a trio of top-three finishers.

Brody Carroll led the way for the Warriors with a first-place finish in the 152-pound weight class. Adam Janzen (182 pounds) and Evan Slater (220 pounds) each earned second place.

“We really have to work on consistency, and we need to get everyone back in our lineup,” coach Chad Adkins said. “This is the final push to the end (of the season), and the kids just have to...

Marion, facing a tough Berean defense Friday, struggled to put points on the board in the opening quarter of Friday’s 42-26 loss at Elbing.

“It was difficult, and we knew (the Berean Warriors) were going to defend hard,” coach Kelly Robson said. “I was surprised the few times they switched into a zone. Actually, I expected them to play hard man-to-man the whole evening, and they were very good at it.”

Thanks to the defensive pressure, the home team surged to a 7-0 lead at the 2:33 mark.

Marion’s first points came when Katey Ehrlich cashed in a traditional three-point play with under one minute remaining in the opening quarter. Berean led 7-3 at the end of the first quarter.

Berean continued to pressure Marion in the...

HHSbbbvLyonsProffitt Tyler Proffitt moves toward the basket for a score that would give Hillsboro a 44-32 lead in the fourth quarter against Lyons. Proffitt scored five points in the Trojans’ 57-43 home victory. The Hillsboro boys used a 19-11 fourth quarter to catapult themselves to a 57-43 home-court win Friday against Lyons.

Hillsboro, coming off a heart-breaking loss to Sterling earlier in the week, improved to 3-1 in league play and 9-6 for the season. Lyons dropped to 1-3 and 5-9.

After splitting two games earlier this season, this rubber match was for league standings. Lyons took an early 7-3 lead, but by the end of the first quarter the Trojans led 14-11 and never trailed again.

A three-pointer by Brett Weinbrenner in the final two seconds of the first half bumped the lead to 28-22 by intermission.

The game slipped into a give-and-take pattern through the third period. A deep three-pointer from Tyler Proffitt with 54 seconds...

Competing in a format that favors teams with full lineups, the Hillsboro wrestling team still managed to go 2-2 Saturday at the Southeast of Saline Dual Tournament.

The Trojans lost 40-9 to Russell, defeated Wabaunsee 31-12, lost to the host team 54-12, then defeated Republic County 39-11.

Eight Trojans competed in a lineup with 14 weight classes.

Against Russell, the Trojans forfeited three matches. But Coach Scott O’Hare said he was disappointed in the way his team started the competition.

“As a team, we came out very flat against a solid Russell team and only managed to pick up wins by our two seniors,” he said. “Tanner Jones narrowly escaped with a 2-1 decision, but Tyrell Thiessen took care of business with a...

MHSbbbBereanHarper1-5 Jacob Harper scores in the paint for a 5-1 Marion lead with 2:31 left in the opening quarter of Friday’s game at Berean. Harper was Marion’s leading scorer for the week, contributing a team-high 11 points against Berean and 21 against Canton-Galva Tuesday. Red-hot defense led Marion to a 36-20 victory at Berean Friday in a low-scoring battle between two Warrior teams.

Marion, ranked eighth in Class 3A, held the home team to one point in the opening quarter on the way to a 9-1 lead.

“(Berean) like(s) to play a low-possession game,”coach Jeff McMillin said. “We knew that if we wanted to have a chance, we needed to really lock down on the defense and be strong on the offensive end because we knew it was going to be low scoring.

“I think we gave our best defensive effort of the year.”

Marion got on the board with a Taylor Heidebrecht free throw at 5:11. The game’s first field goal came five minutes into the period when Jacob Harper scored off a steal.

Berean scored its only...
