HHSgbbHavenSubSchlehuber Hillsboro’s Maci Schlehuber finds a gap in Haven’s defense for a layup during the first quarter of Saturday’s championship game. She was fouled on the play and added a free throw for three of the eight points she scored in the game. It’s been said that defense wins championships, but when both teams play great defense anything can happen.

In a defensive battle royale, the Hillsboro girls held off Haven, 43-32,to win the Class 3A sub-state tournament championship Saturday on their home court. Hillsboro will be making its fifth straight trip to Hutchinson next week in coach Nathan Hiebert’s six-year tenure.

Before the game was over, both teams endured long stretches of minimal scoring. Haven’s came...

DSC0004 Katey Ehrlich eyes the basket in Marion’s 44-25 loss to Hutch Trinity Tuesday night. Ehrlich scored seven points for the Warriors. The Marion girls stumbled out of the gate and, despite a third-quarter rally, dropped a 44-25 contest to Hutchinson Trinity Tuesday night.

The teams traded scores to open the game, but Marion’s final lead came midway through the opening period, 5-4, when Kaelyn Thierolf scored on a second-chance basket.

It was also the Warriors’ final points of the quarter. The Celtics used a 10-0 run to build a 14-5 lead by the end of the period.

“I didn’t feel like we played with very good energy from the very beginning,” coach Kelly Robson said.

The Warriors continued to struggle with turnovers and did not score until Katey Ehrlich made a basket with 4:48 remaining before halftime.

Ehrlich added two free-throws 30 seconds later, but...

HHSbbbKingmanBrown Jesse Brown draws a foul in the lane and cashed in on both charity shots in Hillsboro’s 49-45 victory over Kingman. With a home game in the first round of sub-state on the line, the Hillsboro boys battled through good times and bad at Kingman, but in the end got the job done with a gutty 49-45 win in last Tuesday’s regular-season finale.

The win enabled Hillsboro to secure the No. 3 seed this week with a 12-8 record.

As if to reinforce the importance of the game, the story line resembled a three-act drama.

Act 1: Idyllic start. Hillsboro came out of the gate impressively. The Trojans forced three straight turnovers on the defensive end, then cashed them in with three easy baskets on three laser-like passes for a quick 6-0 lead.

By the time Shaq Thiessen entered the game and scored almost immediately at the 4:00 mark, the Trojans led 11-0. A...

DSC0088 Jacob Harper draws a foul and would go on to make one of two from the line in the second quarter against Hutch Trinity. Harper led the Warriors with 24 points in Marion’s 54-38 win. Judging by the final score, one might assume the Marion boys’ game against Hutchinson Trinity Tuesday was never close.

But the Warriors trailed at halftime, and after trailing by six to open the second half, scored more points in the third quarter than the first half combined to run away with a 54-38 victory to end the regular season.

It took time for the Warriors to get rolling. Marion held a narrow, 10-9, lead after the first quarter. But the Celtics surged to a 15-10 lead with 3:52 left in the second quarter. The Warriors played from behind the rest of the quarter and went into the locker room down 20-16.

“We’ve been having a lot of confidence issues lately, and it carried over even into the first half of this game,”...
