MHS track boys take first at Halstead

Weather factors caused the Marion track and field team to take part in one of two scheduled meets last week.Halstead—With Sterling’s CKTL meet canceled last Tuesday, the Warriors traveled Friday to Halstead for the Conrad Nightingale Invitational.
“We had a good meet,” coach Grant Thierolf said. “The boys’ team barely hung on for a win, with our throwers and field event people once again leading the way.”

Marion baseball loses first two games

The Marion baseball team suffered its first losses of the season last week.It was a week that saw the Warriors take part in two of four scheduled games as the already rescheduled doubleheader at Canton-Galva had to be postponed again because of weather.
Sedgwick—Marion dropped both games to Sedgwick Tuesday, 13-2 and 8-7.
In Game 1, Sedgwick took control early by scoring 10 runs to Marion’s one in the opening inning.
It was a deficit from which the Warriors could not recover.
Taylor Heidebrecht went 3-for-3 at the plate and scored one run. Grif Case hit a sacrifice fly and had one RBI.
Ethan Hett pitched 41⁄3 innings and gave up six hits and five runs (three earned) while walking no one and striking out seven...
HHS softball sweeps Canton-Galva

Hillsboro rolled to a couple of run-rule victories Friday against Canton-Galva at Galva.The Trojans followed an 18-0 four-inning win with an 11-1 conquest in five innings to improve to 9-1 for the season.
In the opener, pitcher Allison Weber limited the Eagles to one hit—a single by Jennifer Likes in the bottom of the fourth. Weber struck out six batters and walked one to improve to 4-1.
Meanwhile, the Trojans roughed up Eagle starter Hannah O’Neil for 12 hits, including Madison Klein’s first over-the fence home run of her career. She drove in four runs for the game.
Julie Sinclair, Emily Jost and Kennedy Lucero each contributed three hits.

Goessel—The track meet Goessel was scheduled to host last Tuesday was postponed until Friday because of weather.The Goessel boys took third among five teams with 49 points behind Berean (187) and Hillsboro (96), while the girls placed third with 72 points behind Berean (199) and Hillsboro (79).
The boys were led by Brian Hiebert, who placed first in the shot put (39 feet, 0.5 inches).
The girls, meanwhile, enjoyed three first-place finishes: Page Hiebert in the long jump (14-21⁄2) and Tia Goertzen in the 100 hurdles (17.20 seconds) and 300 hurdles (51.90).
The Bluebirds participated April 5 at the Bennington Invitational, where both the girls and boys placed 11th.

HHS track earns 11 firsts at Goessel CKTL

With Josh Richert and Emily Sechrist each pulling off a three-race sweep in the distance events, the Hillsboro boys’ and girls’ track teams combined for 11 first-place performances at a five-school Central Kansas Track League meet at Goessel.The quint had been scheduled for last Tuesday, but was postponed because of weather.
For the boys, Richert won the 3,200 meters in 11 minutes, 1.8 seconds, the 1,600 in 4:59.4 and the 800 in 2:11.8.
Shaq Thiessen pulled off a double gold, winning the high jump at 6 feet even and the long jump with 21-9. Tyler Proffitt won the pole vault by clearing 13 feet and Avery Franz took the triple jump with a distance of 39-41⁄4.
Sechrist, meanwhile, won the 1,600 in 11:52.9, the 1,600 in 5:45.6...
