HHSbsbHalSinclairPickoffError041 A pick-off throw from the pitcher gets past the Halstead first baseman, enabling Hillsboro’s Jordan Faul not only to get back to first base safely but to advance to second during the second inning of Game 1. The Hillsboro baseball team ended a six-game week with a doubleheader sweep of Halstead Friday at Memorial Field.

The 11-5 and 12-2 victories bumped the Trojans’ season record to 9-7.

The turning point of the day came in a six-run fifth inning in Game 1. The Trojans had let bases-loaded opportunities to score in the first two innings produce only two runs, and found themselves trailing 5-3 after 41⁄2 innings.

But doubles by Josh Funk and Nathan Unruh and a triple by Lucas Sinclair fueled the six-run rally and a 9-5 lead. The Trojans seemed in control of their destiny from that point on, finishing with 13 hits in the opener and 24 for the night.

Unruh and Funk both had three hits in four at bats to lead the team in Game...

HHSsbHalTenaTag078 After tagging Halstead base runner Marci Diepenbrock for one out, Hillsboro second baseman Tena Loewen prepares to fire to first base to complete the double play during the first game of the Trojans’ doubleheader Friday with the Dragons. Hillsboro won both games by run rule and went 5-1 for the week. The Hillsboro softball team capped a week that began with a pair of tough doubleheaders on Monday and Tuesday with a couple of relatively easy run-rule wins over Halstead on Friday.

A 13-3 victory in six innings followed by a 16-1 rout in four gave the Trojans a 5-1 record for the week and moved their season mark to 14-2 for the season

“It was nice to help the week with more relaxed games,” coach Stephanie Sinclair said.

Against Halstead, Hillsboro had built a 5-2 lead through the first three innings of Game 1, but a seven-run fourth drained any suspense that might be lingering at the Sports Complex.

The big hits of the inning were Tena Loewen’s two-run triple and a bases-loaded single by Bradli Nowak that ended up chasing...
