Faber leads HHS tennis at Hesston

Facing stiff competition in a 10-school tournament, Harry Faber led the Hillsboro tennis team with a fifth-place finish in singles at the Hesston Invita­tional last Wednesday.

With 21 players in a combined bracket, Faber received a bye in the play-in round, then won by default against Austin Brown of Wichita Trinity. In his first competition on the court, the Trojan senior lost 8-2 to Peter Horton of McPherson. He then defeated Michael Ryan of Central Plains 8-6 and Dylan Stos of McPherson...

Goessel—Two Bluebird teams competed at the Goessel JV invitational Friday. Goessel 1 placed sixth with a score of 243. Berean Academy took first (188).

Kellen Froese led the team with a 49 on nine holes for ninth place.

Peabody-Burns—The Warriors competed Friday at the Goessel JV tournament, where Joe Partridge led the team with a 63 on nine holes. Brent Buller finished two strokes behind him at 65.

Canton-Galva—The Eagles competed at the James Thomas Invitational in Hillsboro Friday.

The Canton-Galva boys claimed eighth place among 14 teams with 25 points. Berean Academy won the meet with 114.

Trey Moddelmog led the Eagle boys with a second-place finish in the high jump (6 feet).

Two relay teams placed third: the 4x800 team of Bastian Brass, Eli Janzen, Lane Wiens and Trevor Unruh (9:41.69), and the 4x100 team of Austin Bullinger, Moddelmog, Cody Savage and Austin Moran (46.69).

The girls, meanwhile, placed 10th among 12 teams with five points. Hesston won with 122.

Cassidy Enns led the Eagles with a third-place finish in the high jump (4-8).

Centre—The Cougars were scheduled to compete at the Marion CKTL meet Tuesday...

MHS baseball, softball games postponed

Both Tuesday and Friday brought a dose of precipitation to the area last week, causing all Marion softball and baseball doubleheaders to be postponed.

The Warriors now anticipate 10 games in an eight-day span.

Marion was scheduled to host Bennington Tuesday, April 30. Last Tuesday’s home contest against Ell-Saline has been rescheduled for Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

The Warriors travel to Canton-Galva Friday for a 4:30 p.m. start in a rescheduled doubleheader from April 9.

Last Friday’s doubleheader at Inman was postponed until Monday, with game time set for 3 p.m., and the Warriors will follow with two games at Halstead Tuesday beginning at 4:30 p.m.

 

HHS baseball sweeps Sunrise Christian

HHSbsbSCADylanPitching915 Dylan Nelson (1-0) fires a pitch in Game 1 against Sunrise Christian Academy Thursday. The Trojans won that game, 16-1, in 21⁄2 innings. Nelson gave up four hits and struck out two hitters and did not walk anyone until the third inning. Hillsboro had little trouble subduing an undermanned Sunrise Christian Academy baseball team Thursday, rolling to a 16-1 and 12-2 run-rule sweep at Memorial Field.

The victories improved the Trojans’ season record to 6-4.

“Sunrise is building a program,” coach Doug Dick said. “They had some good players at positions, but just not enough.”

In a Game 1 halted by the mercy rule after 21⁄2 innings, Hillsboro took advantage of three Buffalo walks and six errors to generate 16 runs in two team at-bats.

To that mix the Trojans added eight base hits, including a 3-for-3 performance by Nathan Unruh. Lucas Sinclair drove in three runs with a base-loaded double in the second inning.

Hillsboro led 7-0 after one inning and 16-0...
