HHS football camp set for July 23-28

The annual Hillsboro High School football camp is set for July 23-28.

Sessions will run from 6:30 a.m. to about 9:30 a.m., according to head coach Len Coryea.

The camp is open to HHS students entering grades nine through 12 this fall.

Likewise, after clinching gold at 5-6, JuliAnne Chisholm (right photo) clears 5-8. She just missed at 5-9, which would have tied the meet record. These two events resulted in HIllsboro’s only gold medals, but the team did well in other events to win the title.

Neither a wearisome weather wait nor a blazing blonde from Burling­ton could derail the Hillsboro High girls from winning the Class 3A title this weekend at the Kansas High School Track & Field Cham­pionships in Wichita.

Goessel’s Hiebert and Marion’s Carr lead area schools

The team came back to take second in the finals. Marion’s Erin Carr (left) gets off to a strong start in the 100-meter finals against Burling­ton speedster Katie Guevel, who won four gold medals. Carr took home three silver medals: in the 100, 200 and 4x100 to pace Marion to a fourth-place team finish. Andrew Topham of Peabody-Burns battles Kaleb Humphreys in the early going of the 3,200. Both runners broke the 1A meet record, but Hum­phreys picked up the close victory.

It was a dramatic individual effort to cap an impressive team performance.

Trojans baseball season ends in 16-6 loss at Hoisington regional

A tightly played contest in the early going unraveled toward the end, leaving Hillsboro with a 16-6 run-rule loss to Hoisington in the semifinals of the Class 3A regional tournament played Wednesday at Hoisington.

Starters Justin Axman for the Cardinals and Travis Riesen for the Trojans were locked in a 2-0 contest through three innings after Hoisington scored single runs in the first and second inning.
