PBHS beat Bulldogs 13-7 in district opening

A late-game touchdown run by Ben Eldridge gave Peabody-Burns all the advantage they needed to polish off Chase County, 13-7, in the district opener Friday for both teams.

The Warriors had carried a 6-0 lead into halftime on the strength of a 2-yard plunge by Trevor Hamm with 29 seconds left before intermission.

The game got off to an inauspicious start when both teams moved backward on their opening drives, in each case as a result of a fumbled option pitch on third down.

After the third of six Chase County punts, PBHS took over with 5:21 left in the half, and 14 plays later, Hamm broke through with the initial score.

MHS girls take second at MCAA meet

The Marion girls’ cross country team placed second at the Mid-Central Activities Association league meet Saturday at Hoisington.

Camille Christensen led Marion’s runners, placing fourth in 17 minutes, 47 seconds.

Amanda Richmond (18:13) finished seventh and Jaclyn DeForest (18:23) placed ninth.

Tacy Taylor (17th, 18:47), Brooke Johnson (18th, 18:48), Bridgett Lundy (28th, 19:40) and Lucy Collett (44th, 21:29) rounded out the varsity team.

As a team, Marion totaled 50 points and finished second to Smoky Valley with 45.

Wichita Collegiate (102), Halstead (108), Hillsboro (114) and Hesston (118) also fielded teams.

Marion goes 1-2 at Trojan Invitational

The Marion volleyball team went 1-2 at the Trojan Invita­tional at Hillsboro on Saturday.

In their first match in pool play, the Warriors faced tournament Oskalooska for the first time. MHS coach Jim Versch said Oskalooska, seeded third in the tournament with a 25-5 mark is “a very scrappy and good offensive team.”

Marion lost the match (15-25, 20-25) then lost to Hillsboro (19-25, 15-25) in its second match.

“I felt we played with Hills­boro, but could never get over the hump to get the momentum to finish the game,” Versch said.

The third match pitted the Warriors against league rival Sterling, a team Marion had defeated earlier in the season.

The Bluebirds pasted Sunrise Christian Academy, 58-8, in Wichita.

The usual suspects did the damage on Friday, with Craig Banman scoring touchdowns on both offense and defense—first, a 35-yard fumble return and then a 28-yard run.

Travis Fensky scored three times: on a 4-yard run, a 13-yard pass from Austin Unruh and a 45-yard run. He finished with six carries for 94 yards.

Dustin Peterson scored on runs of 2 yards and 4 yards, and finished with six carries for 50 yards.

Austin Unruh opened the scoring for Goessel with a 10-yard run, and finished 5-for-9 for 40 yards passing.

Goessel has posted at least 50 points in every game since Sept. 14, when it defeated Wichita Trinity 46-0.
