Marion volleyball ends in sub-state 1st round

Marion High concluded its volleyball season Saturday with a two-game loss to Hoisington in the opening round of the sub-state tournament at Southeast of Saline.

The Warriors, who came in as the No. 7 seed with an 8-22 season record, lost to the Cardinals (33-5), 16-25, 11-25.

Marion started strong and trailed Hoisington only by a point at 11-12 in Game 1. But the Cardinals took control by scoring seven of the next nine points for a 19-13 advantage.

A kill by Julia Zeiner brought the Warriors to within 16-20, but Hoisington closed out the match with a 6-0 run behind the serving of Laura Richards.

In Game 2, Marion fell behind 0-3, then battled back to 4-6 before Hoisington slowly lengthened its lead to 11-7.

Peabody-Burns

The Warriors hammered Yates Center 30-0 Friday.

Ben Eldridge scored 2-yard touchdown runs in both the first and second quarters, and PBHS added a safety early in the third.

Later in the frame, Will Pratt scooped up a blocked punt and scored on a 10-yard return.

Trevor Hamm iced the game with a 3-yard run in the fourth quarter. Pratt nailed the extra point kick after each of the touchdowns.

Nathan Bishop completed 8 of 12 pass attempts for 82 yards. Five of those completions went to Brandon Pickens, who totaled 45 receiving yards.

Peabody’s longest play from scrimmage came as Adam Benson caught a 34-yard pass from Bishop.

The Warriors totaled 123 rushing yards, with Hamm totalling 76 yards on 18 attempts for an...

The Warriors were bounced out of the post-season in the first roundof sub-state play, losing to Ben­ning­ton (15-25, 25-21, 23-25) inthree games.

Canton-Galva—The Eagles were knocked out of substate play in the first round by Minnea­polis (25-12, 25-11) on Saturday.

 Centre

The Cougars forced a third game, but White City still knocked Centre out of the first round of the regional tournament held Oct. 16 at Goessel.

The Cougars got 9 kills from Leann Pankratz and 7 from Kylie Burhoop, along with 5 aces from Carlye Simons on the day.

Centre finished 13-15 on the season.Goessel

Peabody-Burns—

Aaron Topham finished sixth in 19 minutes, 27 seconds at the Class 2A regional Saturday at Sterling.

He was followed by Duane Unruh (8th, 19:42), Ryan Wiebe (13th, 20:14),Kendall Wiebe (14th, 20:32), Sheldon Wiebe (15th, 20:41), Josh Klarman(18th, 20:57) and Seth Methvin (30th, 22:25).

Peabody-Burns claimed second as a team with 51 points, trailing Sterling (27) and edging Meade (53). All three schools qualified for the state race Saturday at Wamego.

In the girls’ 4-kilometer race, Lauren Pickens placed ninth in 19:01, qualifying to run individually at Wamego.Canton-Galva—

The Eagles’ season ended Saturday in Sterling. Sam Janzen led the boys’ team across the line, placing 29th in 22:24.
