Facing perhaps its stiffest competition so far this season, the Hillsboro wrestling team placed third among 11 teams at the Herington Invitational on Saturday.

Class 4A powers Abilene and Chapman claimed first and second place, respectively, with 179 and 1461⁄2 team points. The Trojans accumulated 1151⁄2.

“I left this tournament with mixed feelings,” said Hillsboro coach Scott O’Hare. “In the five seasons that I have been head coach, this was our highest finish at this...

Behind 19 points from Ben Krause and 17 from Trevor Troutt, the Cougars bounced Elyria Christian 69-47 Friday.

Krause poured in 10 points during Centre’s 18-8 first quarter run, including a 3-point shot, an old-fashioned 3-point play, and two 2-point baskets.

Krause dropped in another 3-pointer during the team’s 21-9 second-quarter burst. Six Cougars scored during the frame, and Centre held a 39-17 halftime lead.

Five Cougars got on the board in the third quarter and seven players scored during the fourth. All told, Centre got one or more field goals from nine different players, five of whom threw in at least 5 points.

With four players in double digits, the Cougars handled ElyriaChristian with ease, staking themselves to a 13-5 lead and neverlooking back on their way to a 57-33 win.

Putting three players in double digits was not enough during the Eagles’ 42-37 loss against Moundridge.

Canton-Galva grabbed an 11-6 lead in the first quarter behind six points from Kylie Haines and earned a 23-22 halftime lead. Moundridge knotted the game at 31-all headed into the fourth.

Near the end, it appeared to be a Christmas present both teams intended to give instead of receive. But in the end Hillsboro wrapped up a hard-fought 51-48 nail-biter Friday over a scrappy Halstead squad at Brown Gymnasium.

In a game that featured 18 lead changes, The Trojans grabbed what proved to be the final advantage when David Loewen made one of two free throws with 1:44 left for a 49-48 edge.

Daniel Jost grabbed Loewen’s miss for a...

A 19-3 surge on either side of halftime carried the Hillsboro girls to a 41-30 win over Halstead in a makeup game against Halstead Friday in Brown Gymnasium.

The Trojans trailed for the last time at 13-12 following a 3-point basket by Halstead’s Marissa Vermillion with 4:44 left in the first half.

Hillsboro’s pivotal surge started modestly when Tiffany Rooker made one of two free throws 17 seconds later. But back-to-back baskets by Kassidi Luthi in the paint, plus a 5-foot jumper by Samantha Heinrichs, gave the Trojans a 7-0 run that...
