Victory eludes Warrior girls

The Marion girls lost to Sterling on Tuesday, 53-47.“This is a game we should have won,” coach Randy Savage said. “We played well enough to win for three quarters, but we gave it away at the end.”

GoesselHutchinson Trinity defeated the Bluebirds 57-25 Tuesday night. Kendra Flaming led GHS with 7 points.
A 13-5 Hutch run in the first quarter put the Bluebirds in a deep hole. But Goessel circled the wagons and outscored their opponent 14-12 in the second frame. A 6-point halftime deficit multiplied during the third quarter, as Trinity outscored Goessel 24-2.
Karina Harvey scored 6 points, Jennifer Raymond 5, Jessica Goertzen 4 and Aspen Frey 3 for GHS. Frey recorded a team-high four steals, but Goessel committed 28 turnovers.
The Bluebirds will return to action Jan. 4 at Sedgwick. On Jan. 5, Burrton visits Goessel. The postponed Dec. 14 home game against Argonia will be made up Jan. 28.Peabody-Burns

GoesselHutchinson Trinity defeated the Bluebirds 53-31 on Tuesday, jumpingto a 22-7 first-quarter advantage that grew to 48-24 after threequarters.
Weston Hiebert led GHS with 8 points on 4-for-7 shooting. Austin Unruh scored 7 points, Travis Fensky 5, Cameron Voth 4 and Craig Banman, Kendall Voth and Nathan Ensz 2 each. Goessel committed 26 turnovers.
The Bluebirds return to competition Jan. 4 at Sedgwick. On Jan. 5, Burrton visits Goessel with a 7:30 p.m. tip-off. Goessel will host Peabody-Burns Jan. 8.

The Marion High School girls basketball team was battered by Smoky Valley’s senior guard-forward tandem of Rhys Pihl and Jenna Koch Friday night and absorbed a 77-60 loss in Lindsborg.
Winter wrapped the region in a blanket of snow, but Koch and Pihl were red-hot, combining for 54 points. Pihl led the Vikings with 32 points, while Koch added 22.
No other Viking topped six points, but the eruption from the twosome wiped out double-digit efforts from Marion’s Julia Zeiner, Lindsay Hett and Kayley Heerey.

Dippel drops 39 as Smoky Valley tops Marion 70-50

The Marion High School boys were scorched by Chase Dippel and his Smoky Valley teammates Friday night in Lindsborg. Dippel scored 39 points as the Vikings topped the Warriors 70-50.Calvin Jeffrey tallied 20 points for Marion.
Neither side put a second player in double digits. Luke Gordon posted eight points for Marion as did Ridge Jones for Smoky Valley.
Chase Carlson gave Marion a 4-2 lead 57 seconds into the contest on a pair of foul shots after getting whacked on a dribble-drive.
The teams traded scores, with Jeffrey drilling a 15-footer on the left wing to restore the slim advantage.
Eric Vogel posted up on Marion’s next trip, making a nice catch underneath the rack and flipping in the layup off the glass.
