Goessel—The Olpe Eagles overpowered the Bluebirds 71-59 Saturday in the Class 1A sub-state finals at Emporia. The Bluebirds finished 18-7.

Craig Banman scored 21 points, including a 4-for-6 showing from the 3-point arc. Nathan Ensz tallied 13 points.

Goessel overpowered St. Paul 58-15 Thursday.

Peabody-Burns—The Warriors fell to St. Marys 71-55 Friday at the Wabaunsee Class 2A sub-state tournament, closing out the season 12-10.

The mettle to medal

Hhswrestling.jpg Hhswrestling.jpg Both Hillsboro and Marion came home from the Class 3-2-1A state wrestling tournament in Hays this weekend with one medal winner.

For Hillsboro, senior Frankie Martin made the most of his state debut, finishing sixth at 171 pounds. Dillon Wildin led Marion with a sixth-place finish at 135 pounds.

As a team, the eight competing Trojans, including Grady Stultz who represented Goessel in the post-season,recorded eight wins and compiled 21 points to place 26th among the 60 schools represented.

“I am proud of these eight guys, and the rest of the team, for the way they worked and competed this year,” said Hillsboro coach Scott O’Hare.

“I am especially happy for Frankie for earning his state medal,” he added...

Trojans claim sub-state win

HHSbbLoewenP2256574.jpg HHSbbLoewenP2256574.jpg Clay Shewey, fully recovered from an ankle sprain on Thurs­day,poured in 28 points to lead Hillsboro to a 73-61 win at South­east ofSaline in the first round of sub-state play Monday.

Shewey set the tone by hitting the first points of the game—a 3-pointer from the right corner 29 seconds into the contest. The first quarter went back and forth with the Trojans from Hillsboro holding a 16-13 edge at the end of one quarter over the Trojans from Southeast.

HHS girls drop finale to Vikings

But the 6-2 finish by the Vikings seemed to tip thescales against Hillsboro, as the visitors went on to win 39-29 Thursdayin the final regular-season game for both teams.

Defense set a low-scoring tone at the start as the Trojans and Vikings traded turnovers and missed shots on the way to a 4-4 deadlock after one quarter. Smoky Valley’s Maggie Pihl outduels Kassidi Luthi (33) and Samantha Heinrichs of Hillsboro for a rebound during the first half of action Thursday. The Vikings went on to defeat Hillsboro, 39-29, to end the regular season for both teams.

Centre—Hamilton proved no match for the Cougars, who rolled to a66-36 victory Feb. 18. Trevor Troutt scored 21 points along with 12rebounds. Zach Slayden scored 10 points.

Thursday’s meeting with White City proved a difficult matchup, with the Cougars outscored 13-23 in the second quarter of a 60-45 loss to the Huskies. Troutt scored 13 and Slayden scored 11.

Goessel—The Bluebirds crushed the White City Huskies 58-28 on their home floor in the Class 1A regional final Saturday.

A 19 point, 13 rebound double-double by Nathan Ensz proved decisive, as did the 16-8 run Goessel put together in the first quarter.

Ensz scored six in that frame and threw in eight more during a 15-9 run in the third quarter.
