Kunantaev paces Hillsboro to eighth place Friday

Marion finished fifth and Hillsboro eighth in a strong 17-school field at the fifth annual Marion County Invitational Golf Tournament on a beastly windy and cool Friday.

The 36-hole event, played as back-to-back 18-hole rounds at Hillsboro and Marion, is believed to be the only 36-hole event in the state.

HHS bounced out at regional tournament

The Hillsboro tennis season ended Thursday at the regional tournament it hosted at the Sports Complex.

The two Trojan entries in singles, Clay Shewey and Mark Prieb, fell one victory short of qualifying for state, losing in the quarterfinals. The top four finishers move on.

Shewey, who made it to state a year ago, shut out Republic County’s Trenton Colburn, 6-0, 6-0, in the opening round before losing to Kevin Davis of Ells­worth, 2-6, 1-6 in his next outing.

“Clay unfortunately wasn’t was sharp as he was a few weeks ago when he beat Davis, 8-3,” coach Stuart Holmes said. “Both were state qualifiers last year and today Clay just didn’t play as well as David did.”

Prieb, meanwhile, defeated Alex Lesperance of Hutchinson...

Trojan boys place second at Hesston Invitational

The Hillsboro boys ran into a strong Garden Plain team and settled for second place in the 11-team field at the Hesston Invita­tional Thursday.

The Trojans girls finished eighth in a 10-team field.

For the boys, Hillsboro accumulated 84 points while the Owls from Garden Plain scored 122.

Cody McMillen was a double gold winner in the individual events, taking the 1,600 meters in 4 minutes 37.68 seconds and the 3,200 in 10:22.28.

“Cody was finally pushed today in the 1,600 and this is going to pay great dividends as we near the end of our season,” coach Dennis Boldt...

Hillsboro and Smoky Valley traded comfortable victories Thursday May 1 at Lindsborg.

The Trojans started the day with a 12-1 shellacking in the opener, but the Vikings had their way with Hillsboro in the nightcap, 10-6.

The games were originally scheduled for April 11, but had been postponed because of rain. SCORECARD

Hillsboro wasted no time in Game 1, exploding for six runs in the top of the first inning. The Trojans took advantage of five walks in the frame and Bri Loewen, Taylor Nikkel and Jenesa Klose added base hits.
