Goessel—The Bluebirds crushed Fairfield 54-8, but Friday’s game with looked to be a battle of defenses for the first five minutes. Goessel had the opening possession and turned the ball over to Fairfield on fourth down.Two plays later, the Fairfield quarterback picked up a high snap and tossed the ball downfield for a touchdown.
Goessel then scored 54 straight points, as the defense stiffened and a mixture of passing and running plays helped the Bluebirds to their third lopsided win...

The Trojans jumped on the home team early when Daniel Jost returned the Eagles’ punt at the end of the opening possession for 58 yards and a score. Jake Wiebe kicked the extra point and the Trojans led 7-0 less than 2 minutes into the contest.

The Marion Warriors celebrated homecoming with a 21-14 win over Nickerson Friday, gashing the Panthers for 31 rushing yards and a touchdown with an 11-play series out of the gate.
Nickerson received the opening kickoff and fumbled the ball away on its third play from scrimmage. Brad Klenda recovered the loose ball.
The offense then converted on fourth-and-one twice, setting the stage for a four-yard touchdown run by Mitchell Leppke and a 7-0 lead 6:20 into the contest.

The Hillsboro volleyball team split a pair of matches at a triangular last Tuesday in Nickerson.Hillsboro easily dispatched winless Lyons, 25-13, 25-7, but lost to the home team, 17-25, 25-25, 25-20, in the first league match for both teams.
The split put Hillsboro at 9-2, but 0-1 in league play.
Coach Sandy Arnold said she wasn’t surprised that Nickerson gave her team a battle.
“Already in preseason I thought Nickerson would be a good team,” she said. “They play a lot of club ball in the summer. I think club ball is a lot faster pace, and they play that kind of style.

Marion volleyball claims 4th

The mere fact that coach Jim Versch looks at the Marion High School volleyball team’s fourth-place finish at the tournament in Marion Saturday at least partially as a loss to be explained rather than as the crown jewel of the season so far speaks volumes about the strides the Warriors are expected to make this season.And they are, in fact, making strides.
Marion, 8-23 a season ago, got a taste of first place at the Centre Invitational a week ago and matched its 2007 win total with a 2-3 showing at its home event this week.
The Warriors defeated Eureka (25-23, 25-20) to win its first match under the lights of the new gymnasium. Marion then whacked Halstead (25-19, 28-26) to stake a claim to a berth in bracket play.
