The mere fact that coach Jim Versch looks at the Marion High School volleyball team’s fourth-place finish at the tournament in Marion Saturday at least partially as a loss to be explained rather than as the crown jewel of the season so far speaks volumes about the strides the Warriors are expected to make this season.And they are, in fact, making strides.

Faber fifth in singles in Hesston

The Hillsboro tennis team competed Tuesday, Sept. 16, at Hesston.Sophomore Becky Faber led the effort by winning the consolation bracket, placing fifth overall with a 3-1 record. Faber beat Danica Good of Hesston 8-2, lost to Janel Prather of Sterling 1-8, then beat Chelsea Ellis of Sacred Heart 8-3 and Danica Good of Hesston again 8-1.
Kelsey Bartel lost to Asheley Allman of McPherson 5-8, Morgan Schrock of Hesston 3-8, and defeated Ruby Miller of Haven 8-0 in No. 2 singles.
The No. 1 doubles team of Emma Heyen and Aubrey Meier lost to Franz and Bognaes of Hesston 3-8, Richenberger and Eash of Haven 7-8 (3-7) and McCullers and Britton of Sterling 1-8.

HHS boys run to 11th place in Wichita

Once again trading the advantages of a Saturday morning meet early in the season for the challenge of battling big-school competition, the Hillsboro cross-country teams competed at the Wichita Southeast Invitational this weekend.The boys’ team, compiling 258 points, placed 11th among the 12 schools that competed for a team title. Campus won with 35 points.
Leading the way for HHS was Nathan Vogel, who covered the 3.1-mile course in 18 minutes, 29 seconds and finished 35th among the 87 runners who finished.
Brayden Barrientez of Campus won the race in 16:23.

Goessel—The Bluebirds placed fourth in their own tournament with a 2-3 record for the day.
Sedgwick defeated Goessel (18-25, 25-16, 16-25), then Goessel defeated Halstead (25-17, 25-10) and South Haven (25-17, 25-22). Goessel ran out of gas against Central (19-25, 23-25) and Remington (18-25, 21-25).
Coach Crysta Guhr said Aspen Frey had “a phenomenal day” with 38 kills and 21 digs. Frey also posted a 35 of 37 serving mark with four aces.
“She really stepped up when we needed kills,” Guhr said.
Rinda Duerksen and Karis Janzen each had 20 blocks on the day. Duerksen also had 23 digs. Karina Harvey led in digs with 47 Jessica Goertzen led in assists with 80.

Canton-Galva vs. Centre—Canton-Galva nearly duplicated Goessel’s effort of the previous week, shutting out Centre 46-0.
Bryant Baldwin plunged into the end zone from six yards out 1:30 into the first quarter and Tony Arendt hit paydirt on the conversion run.
The Eaglesscored twice more in the opening period, on a 59-yard punt return and a 61-yard run, but was stuffed on both conversions to carry a 20-0 lead into the second quarter.
Canton-Galva continued to roll when Shearer snared a throw from Williams with 7:50 to go before halftime. Williams struck on a 9-yard run later in the period, and the Eagles led 32-0 at half.
