Hillsboro tennis season ends at Hutch Trinity

The Hillsboro girls’ tennis season ended Thursday at the Class 3-2-1A regional tournament hosted by Hutchinson Trinity.

Goessel

—The Bluebirds finished league play 9-2 with wins over Sedgwick (20-25, 26-24, 25-19) and Little River (25-16, 25-15). Karis Janzen led the team with 17 kills, Karina Harvey led in digs with 25 and Jessica Goertzen earned 36 assists.

Nine wins placed Goessel (23-6 overall) third in the twelve team League. The Bluebirds played at Remington with Peabody after press time Tuesday. Goessel will be at Inman for the HOA league championship tournament Saturday.Centre

—The Cougars (14-3 overall) went 4-1 at Solomon Saturday, defeating White City (25-21, 25-19), St. Xavier (25-19, 25-13) and Elyria (25-12, 25-20).

Centre lost to Wakefield (18-25, 22-25) in an early match, but bounced back to win the second meeting 25-21...

—Behind three Travis Fensky touchdowns, the Bluebirds shut out Little River 48-0 to become the only remaining undefeated team in Eight Man District 4.

The Bluebirds led 28-0 at the end of the first quarter, 42-0 at half-time and scored on a punt return in the third period to end the game early in the quarter using the eight-man 45 point rule.

The Goessel defense prevented Little River’s running game from gaining much on the ground and limited the Redskins passing attack.

Fenske scored twice running and once receiving, and Craig Banman scored three touchdowns: one running, one receiving and one punt return. Banman also kicked four extra points.

Austin Unruh scored one touchdown and threw for two more as the offense...

Wiebe leads PBHS at Chapman Invitational

Kendall Wiebe led the Peabody-Burns High School cross country boys to the line at Chapman Thursday. Wiebe placed eighth in the upperclassmen race with a time of 18:25.

“Chapman’s is our first real race on hills,” coach Kim Topham said. “Our runners handled the course well.”

Sophomore Sheldon Wiebe placed sixth in the underclassmen race with a time of 19:29.

“Sheldon Wiebe showed significant improvement over last year by running 1 minute and 42 seconds faster this year,” Topham said.

Seth Methvin (17th, 19:57) ran the upperclassmen race 1:20 faster than last year. Kendall Wiebe and Aaron Topham (11th, 18:33) also improved their times.

Josh Klarmann (17th, 19:07) and Chris Schafer (33rd, 22:39) also ran the upperclassmen...

Marion beats Halstead, loses two at Collegiate

The Marion High School volleyball team went 1-2 at the Wichita Collegiate quadrangular Oct. 7. The Warriors lost to the Spartans (16-25, 25-19, 12-25) and Hillsboro (17-25, 24-26) but defeated Halstead (25-22, 22-25, 25-15) in between.

Marion (11-15) got 12 kills from Julia Zeiner and six from Lindsay Hett in the 3-game win over Halstead.

In three games against Collegiate, Zeiner had seven kills and Kayley Heerey had five, but the Warriors saw more errors and fewer digs come out of the back row.

Hett led the Warriors in both kills (7) and assists (6) in the two games against Hillsboro.

“In the second game, we had them right where we wanted them, 24-23, with (Dakota) Kaufman in the back row,” coach Jim Versch said. “But they got...
