HHSsbSVBinaPlate198 Hillsboro’s Danae Bina dives for the plate in an attempt to score during the fourth inning of the first game of the Trojans’ May 8 doubleheader against Smoky Valley. Bina was called out even though the Smoky Valley catcher is blocking the plate, which is a violation of softball rules. Ultimately, the lost run didn’t matter as the Trojans swept the Vikings, 15-6 and 14-3. Fueled by 32 hits, including 11 doubles, the Hillsboro softball team enjoyed a smashing conclusion to the regular season May 8 with a 15-6, 14-3 sweep of Smoky Valley at Lindsborg.

The two victories improved the Trojans’ season record to 17-3 and solidified its No. 1 seeding at this week’s Class 3A regional tournament.

Hillsboro’s dominant day got off to a dubious start as the Vikings built a 6-1 lead through the first two innings of Game 1. The Trojans managed one run on three hits in the second inning, but starting pitcher Courtney Weber struggled from the start.

The usually steady senior walked five batters and gave up three hits before coach Stephanie Sinclair called in Allison Weber to relieve her with one out in the...

It was a good collection of talent, but in the preseason polls the Eagles received little love. In fact, they were picked as low as fifth in the Heart of America League. That kind of prediction could either be deflating or inspire a spirit of determination. The Eagles choose the latter.

Canton-Galva opened the season with 10 consecutive wins and climbed high, not only in...
