Under the direction of second-year coach Chad Lindeman, the Goessel golf team will look to build on last year’s fifth-place team finish at the Class 1A state tournament.
Anchoring the Bluebirds will be three returning state qualifiers: seniors Trey Schmidt, Dan Smucker and Tyler Schulz.
“We have three seniors coming back this season with quite a bit of varsity experience,” Lindeman said. “As a team, that is not a lot of experience, so we will be rebuilding the team as the year goes along.”
Nine new golfers join the team this year.
“We have a bunch of fresh faces, which is exciting for the future of Goessel High School golf,” he said.
The numbers may make it difficult to find the right mix for post-season play.
“A challenge we will face is finding the right group to go into the post season,” Lindeman said. “The varsity spots will change from meet to meet, which will give opportunity for golfers to step up into that role and see what they can do.”
Goessel does not compete in a league, Lindeman said.
The Bluebird coach said he expects to focus on the mental game this season.
“It’s easy to handle when things are going well, but our golfers need to handle the bad shots and not let them ruin the day,” Lindeman said. “They also need to work on course management instead of taking unnecessary chances.”
Goessel is scheduled to open play at Herington April 2.
