Area golf teams struggle at Marion County Invitational

Marion County golf teams struggled against stiff competition Friday at the Marion County Invitational on the Hills?boro and Marion courses.

Centre scored the best finish, placing ninth out of 15 teams with a score of 709 over 36 holes.

Sterling won the tournament by 21 strokes over runner-up Buhler, 650 to 671.

Marion placed 13th at 763, Peabody-Burns was 14th at 764 and Hillsboro was 15th at 789.

The schools were divided into two groups. One group played 18 holes at Hillsboro in the morning and, after lunch, played 19 holes at Marion in the afternoon. The second group reversed that schedule.

Centre?s Adam Matz was the area?s top individual medalist, shooting 160 for the day for sixth place among 89 golfers.

Michael Gellerman of Sterling carded the top score overall with a 141, which gave him a two-stroke win over Gage Scheer of Cheney.

Landon Leiker of Marion finished in the top 10 with a 167 for ninth.

Joining Matz on the Centre team were Tyler Klenda 11th at 167, Trevor Hageberg 52nd at 188, Dylan Svitak 61st at 194, Brian Burhoop 76th at 207 and Kodey Johnson 83rd at 222.

Teaming with Leiker for Marion were Wiley Lundy, who placed 58th at 193, Adam Molleker 72nd at 203, Hogan Lovelady 73rd at 204, Tim Costello 77th at 209 and Brayden Putter 79th at 210

Competing for Peabody-Burns were Jason Wingert, who was 42nd at 181, Trevor Foth, 49th at 185, Sean Bruner 66th at 197, Tommy Morris 71st at 201, McKenzie Ensminger 85th at 226.
