DevinGomezWrestling Devin Gomez of Hillsboro models the form that enabled him to win second place at 85 pounds and first place at 90 pounds at the preseason national tournament in St. Joseph, Mo., this weekend.

Devin Gomez, a fifth-grader at Hillsboro Elementary School and a member of the Hillsboro Wrestling Club, competed in a preseason national tournament this past weekend in St. Joseph, Mo.

“He actually competed in two separate brackets in the 10 & Under division,” said Scott O’Hare, club director. “He finished second in the 85-pound weight class and won the championship in the 90-pound weight class.”

Through the day, Gomez competed against wrestlers from Iowa, Missouri, Florida, Illinois and Indiana.

“Between the two brackets, Devin finished with a record of 7-1,” O’Hare said. “His lone loss was a 1-point decision to a young wrestler from Florida in the championship match in the 85-pound bracket.

“Devin defeated the same kid by three points later in the day in the finals of the 90-pound bracket to win the championship.”
