Canton-Galva—The Eagles’ dropped two road doubleheaders this past week, bringing their season record to 0-10.

The Eagles were swept April 19 by Little River, 10-0 and 9-6. Little River senior Skylar Hill tossed a no-hitter in Game 1, striking out 10.

In Game 2, Bryan Little hit three singles and a double to lead CGHS. Kolby Moddelmog and Taylor Myers both had a pair of singles.

Thursday, Hillsboro swept Canton-Galva, 10-0 and 6-4.

Goessel—The Bluebirds came home with 13 medals and several new personal bests Thurs­day at the Norwich Invitational.

The boys took fifth out of 12 schools with 56 points; and the girls placed sixth with 57 points.

John Berkholz won the 400 in 51.6 seconds to break the meet record. Laird Goertzen won the 1,600 in 5:02 and the 3,200 in 10:41.

Berkholz took second in the 100 at 12.1, third in the 200 in 23.9 and third in the long jump at 20 feet, 11?2 inches.

For the girls, Tia Goertzen took second in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.4 and third in the 300-meter hurdles in 52.6 and in the triple jump at 31-11?2.

Brittny Czarnowsky took second in the 3,200 in 13:46. Jennifer Van Horn placed third in the long jump at 14-5 and third in the...

Hillsboro fourth at first home tourney

Hillsboro’s Grant Shewey returns volley against Greg Rader of Chapman during their opening-round match at the Hillsboro Invitational Thursday. Shewey defeated Rader 8-2, then went on to take second at the home tournament. Paced by their performances in singles, the Hillsboro tennis team finished fourth among seven teams at the Hillsboro Invita­tional Thursday at the Sports Complex.

The tournament was delayed briefly by rain. By the end of the evening, Sterling emerged as the winning team with 58 points, edging Conway Spring by one point and Hutch­inson Trinity by four. Hillsboro followed with 46 points, Smoky Valley 29, Circle 21 and Chap­man with 13.

“For having four of our six varsity guys being sophomores, the guys competed very well,” coach Stuart Holmes said.

Junior Grant Shewey placed second in No. 1 singles and senior Jarod Hamm third in No. 2 singles.

Area golf teams fare well at Hillsboro

Hillsboro’s Devin Dick tees off on the second hole during the Hillsboro Invitational on Friday. He placed seventh individually, 10 strokes behind Centre’s Adam Matz. Devin Dick’s seventh-place effort in the individual competition helped the host team to a sixth-place finish Friday at the nine-school Hillsboro Invita­tional at the Municipal Golf Course.

Dick’s 86 over 18 holes left him 10 strokes behind the individual champion, Adam Matz of Centre.

The Cougars, who finished second as a team with a score of 355, trailed Halstead by seven strokes. Centre’s Tyler Klenda won the fifth-place medal with an 85.

Goessel placed third as a team at 360. Neal Brubaker led the Bluebird effort with an 85, which was fourth-best overall.

Complementing Brubaker’s effort for Goessel were Shane Goerzen with a 90, Jake Smucker 92, Trey Schmidt 93, Braden Unruh 97 and Drake Sterk 98.

Canton-Galva--The Eagles were swept by Southeast of Saline Friday, getting shut out both games. Canton-Galva lost Game 1, 15-0, before the second game, 11-0.

The Eagles were swept at home by Bennington April 5, 16-7 and 17-3. Taylor Myers and Nathan Bray led the Eagle offense, each posting a single and a double.

Canton-Galva was scheduled to host Marion Tuesday before traveling to Inman on Friday.
