Hillsboro swim team strokes to second win of the season

The Hillsboro swim team won its second meet of the season Saturday at Hesston.

Hillsboro rolled up 560.5 points to outpace Hesston with 460 and Solomon with 395.5.

Follow­ing are the individual results for the Hillsboro swimmers.

Girls’ state tourney debuted in 1908

Basketball fans across the state have certainly embraced the girls’ high school game and why not? Each year, the state produces some outstanding players and teams and those players and teams provide no shortage of exciting action.

Like the boys, the girls’ season culminates with the state basketball tournament. Although many may think the girls’ tournament is a rather new creation (post 1972), they gathered for state tournaments many years before that.

The first state basketball tournament in Kansas was held in Lawrence in 1908. Officially known as the University Invita­tional Tournament, it was hosted by the University of Kansas.

All nine softball starters feted by CKL coaches

All nine starters on Hills­boro High School’s state-qualifying softball team received all-league recognition at one level or another from the coaches of the Central Kansas League.

Five Trojans were picked for the first team, three for the second team and one received honorable mention.

Pratt, the first CKL champion, had three starters on the first team, three on the second team and three with honorable mention.

Trojans picked for the first team were Courtney Weber as a pitcher, Sammy Koons at first base, Steph Sanders at second base, Taylor Nikkel for the outfield and Tena Loewen as a utility player.

Voted to the second team were Allie Faul at catcher, Danae Bina at third base and Krista Reimer for the outfield.

Seven baseball players picked for 8 positions

Seven members of Hillsboro High School’s state-qualifying baseball team received all-league recognition at eight positions from the Central Kansas League coaches.

Three Trojans were named to the first team: Dylan Delk as a pitcher, Aaron Bina at catcher and Ben Gardner at third base. All three are seniors.

Picked for the second team were Kale Arnold at pitcher, Luke Moore at pitcher and outfield; Derek Kelsey at outfield and Lucas Sinclair as a utility player.

Moore and Kelsey are juniors, Arnold and Sinclair are sophbomores.

The Trojans finished the season with a 13-6 record, losing in the first round of the Class 3A tournament at Manhattan.

MHS baseball players all-HOA honors

Four players on the Marion High School baseball team received all-league recognition from the Heart of America League coaches.

Junior Cole Lewman nabbed first team honors in the outfield.

Sophomore Ethan Hett was picked for second team pitcher, as was fellow sophomore Grif Case.

Warrior freshman Dylan Seacat earned a second-team spot under utility.

Senior Matt Sprowls earned an honorable mention as catcher.

Marion baseball lost to Hillsboro in the regional semi-finals, giving them a 11-10 season record.

Two members of the Canton-Galva team were honored: Taylor Meyers as a second team pitcher and Kolby Moddelmog as an honorable mention as a utility player.
