Golf tourney a weapon in the fight against cancer

“I just thought, ‘Why not help someone who needs it?’ Maybe if I do something good, it’ll keep passing on.” For one Marion shop owner, a mere seed of an idea has blossomed into an annual golf tournament benefiting people fighting breast cancer.

Tamara Christiansen, owner of the PLANTations flower shop and boutique on Main Street, has organized the event the past two years.

“I just thought, ‘Why not help someone who needs it?’” she said. “Maybe if I do something good, it’ll keep passing on.”

Hillsboro swim team second at Peabody

The Hillsboro swim team finished in second place with 387 points at the Peabody Triangular meet last Saturday.

Lindsborg took first with 699 points and Peabody came in third with 369 points.

Cavanaugh wins putting tourney

Dakota Cavanaugh won the sixth annual putting tournament Saturday at Pine Edge Golf Course, Goessel, but no one made the qualifying putt to win the mower donated by tournament sponsor Hustler Turf Equip­ment of Hesston. Pictured are: (from left) J.C. Saunders, who placed fourth; Jerald Voth, third; Dakota Cavanaugh, first; Chet Roberts, fifth; and Mike Cavanaugh, second. Following the putting tournament, Cross­roads Credit Union, Goessel, sponsored a two-person, 18-hole scramble. Linda Frey and Zach Frey won. Roberts and Leroy Koehn placed second and Dale Dick and Gregg Dick finished third. Clint Hopkins won “closest to the pin” and Clyde Goering won “longest putt.”

Hillsboro’s Austin Calam comes off the blocks in the 15-to-18-year-old boys’ 50-yard backstroke. Calam also competed in the 50-yard freestyle and the 50-yard breaststroke. He took second for Hillsboro in the breaststroke with a time of 36.74. The Hillsboro swim team garnered eight first-place finishes in last Saturday’s meet at Marion, topping off a meet performance of 51 top-three finishes.

The Marion Blue team won the team title with 771 points. Hillsboro followed with 470, Herington with 219 and the Marion Red team with 23.

Following are the individual results for the Hillsboro swimmers. Marion results were not available by press time.

Early girls’ basketball team caught Sports Illustrated’s attention

As I mentioned in a previous column, we can trace high school girls’ basketball in Kansas back to the year 1908. Those early games used rules far different from the game we know today.

In those days, girls in the Sunflower State played a six-on-six game. Only the forwards were allowed to shoot and unlimited dribbling was not permitted. Certain players could only play on the offensive side of the court while their teammates played only in the defensive end. Across Kansas, these rules were sometimes modified even more, depending on the locality.

Even with the unique rules, a girls’ state basketball tournament was held from 1908 to 1921. After the 1921 season, the girls’ state tournaments were discontinued, but not because the girls...
