TaraProffitt295 Tara Proffitt, 14-year-old daughter of Scott and Jennifer Proffitt, displays two souvenirs from her Junior Olympics experience last month: the T-shirt she’s wearing and the official program for the six-day event. She was one among 7,000 athletes competing at the USA Track and Field Junior Olympics July 26-31 in Wichita. But Tara Proffitt was the only competitor there who could call Hillsboro home.

As far as she knows, at least.

“It’s kind of weird being at such a big track because there’s so many people there,” she said. “You kind of get nervous.”

Stiles, who was a star for Claflin High School, is one of the most celebrated basketball players (boy or girl) this state has ever seen. Even as a young girl she enjoyed her time in the gym with her father and spent hours upon hours working on the game she loved.

Once in high school, she wasted little time in claiming dominion over the game. In her first varsity game as a freshman, Stiles tossed in 36 points and then...

“Definitely, my work ethic was established in Hillsboro,” said Chisholm, a 2007 Hillsboro High School grad. “I spent a lot of time in the weight room. Our practices were hard and they were hot.”

Those high school practices paved the way for a rigorous college schedule that includes daily sessions lifting weights and sometimes running court drills and practices.

“We were constantly going, and that’s the way it is up here,” Chisholm said.

Though she is now in her second year as a K-State basketball player, Chisholm may be better known for her...
