Utting wins club title

Stan Utting, Hillsboro, posted a two-day total of 145 to claim first place out of the field of 33 participants at the Hillsboro Municipal Golf Course club championship Aug. 4-5.

Utting reached the clubhouse in 72 on Saturday and shot 73 on Sunday to edge Anthony Thiessen by two strokes.

Thiessen took second place in the championship flight by matching an opening-round 73 with a 74-shot performance the second day of the event for a total of 147.

Water aerobics helping locals beat heat

With temperatures climbing toward triple-digits, the opportunity to mix exercise with a tried and true way to beat the heat has been a boon to the 20 to 30 people who have made a habit of attending the water aerobics classes being offered at the Hillsboro Family Aquatic Center.



Course instructor Anna Woods teaches classes for seniors on Tuesday and Thursday mornings and a “more advanced class” on Wednesday evenings.

Woods started instructing water aerobics classes in Oklahoma while attending college, and has taught water aerobics for four years.

“I teach a lot of land classes all year round, and doing water aerobics is a nice change,” Woods said.

60 golfers compete at HCMC charity scramble

Roger Flaming, Phillip Thiessen, Anthony Thiessen and Doug Dick shot a 61 to win the seventh annual Hillsboro Community Medical Center Charity Golf Classic at the Hillsboro Municipal Golf Course Aug 10.

Fifteen teams participated in the four-person scramble.

Second place in the championship flight went to Rich Nickel, Jerold Vogt, Andy Friesen and Mike Esau with a score of 63.

In the first flight, first place went to the Tabor College team comprised of Lawrence Ressler, Jeremy Jordan, Clint Seibel and Shawn Winter.

Second place in the flight belonged to the team from Preferred Health Systems with Jeremy Gilson, Ryan Tandy, Mike Moore and Bruce Witt.

Banman to play in Babe Ruth Classic

Craig Banman, Goessel, has been selected to play in the Babe Ruth Classic on Sunday, Aug. 12 in Elkhart. The Kansas Babe Ruth Classic originated in 1999 as a way to showcase the 36 most talented 15-year-old players participating in the Kansas Babe Ruth baseball program. The exhibition is played at various sites throughout Kansas and consists of two seven-inning games. Players are selected during district tournament competition. On Sunday team pictures will be taken at 11 a.m. followed by opening ceremonies and two games.

Hillsboro High School standout JuliAnne Chisholm slips through three of the North squad’s defenders at the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association all-star game Wednesday, Aug. 1, at Lee Arena on the Washburn University campus in Topeka. Chisholm was one of five of the Topeka Capitol-Journal’s all-state selections to play in the game and scored seven points as the South rolled to an 83-78 victory.
