13 area hoops athletes receive All-WSL status

Thirteen athletes from three area schools received all-league recognition from Wheat State League coaches for their performance during the past basketball season.Goessel landed five players on the list. For the girls, who finished 10-12, senior Jessica Harvey was selected for the first team.
Three members of the boys’ 9-12 team received recognition. Senior David Cook was named to the first team while classmates Trey Schmidt and Nic Buller received honorable mention.

The best teams find a way to win, even on an off night. The Marion boys’ basketball team did just that last Tuesday with a fourth-quarter rally that carried them to a 40-39 home victory over Remington.“Even the best team doesn’t go a whole year without being tested, and they have to dig in and grind one out,” coach Jeff McMillin said. “And that’s really what tonight was, grinding it out to win the game.”
The Marion girls weren’t so lucky, losing a 39-19 decision to the Broncos.
Boys—Marion came out as flat as week-old Pepsi in the first half of play with breakdowns on defense, a dearth of rebounding and a struggle to score.

A big debut for a small wrestler

Josiah Wiebe of Hillsboro made his competitive wrestling debut Saturday at the 14th annual Hillsboro Takedown Tournament in the Hillsboro High School gymnasium. In the top photo, Josiah takes on Brody Chambers of the Salina Wrestling Club in the Age 6 and Under Division. Josiah lost the match by a 9-8 score in the final seconds and went 0-3 for the day. Small bodies, big moves rule the day at Hillsboro

“The tournament ran very smoothly and we had a great turnout,” said Scott O’Hare, director of the tournament and the Hillsboro Wrestling Club.
“The parents involved with the program really did a fine job stepping up to help with tournament preparation, helping throughout the tournament, and coaching these young wrestlers,” he said.
“I am very excited about the direction the Hillsboro wrestling program is headed and look forward to the opportunity to continue working with these kids and their families.”

Goessel athletes dominate Wheat State all-league list

The Goessel Bluebirds dominated this year’s Wheat State League post-season volleyball honors with five players on the all-league first team and a sixth player receiving honorable mention.Both Centre and Peabody-Burns were represented by one player on the first team and one on the second team. Three Cougars received honorable mention as did one Warrior.
Bluebirds named to the first team were seniors Tia Goertzen, Alex Hiebert, Jessica Harvey and Johanna Hoffman and freshman Page Hiebert. Sophomore Erin Brubaker received honorable mention.
The Bluebirds finished the season with a 29-10 record. They played for the sub-state championship and a state tournament berth, but lost to Olpe, who went on to win the state title.
