Hillsboro girls win league softball title

The Hillsboro 12-and-under girls’ softball team won the league tournament championship game held in Marion Thursday night against Marion Body Shop by a score of 3-2. The team went 8-0 in regular season play and extended its record to 11-0 with three consecutive playoff wins. Hillsboro goes 2-2 on road swing, now 12-4

American Legion Post 366 played all its games on the road this week, and was swept in a doubleheader for the first time this season.

Hillsboro took two losses at Chase County on Tuesday, 10-6 in Game 1 and 7-6 through six innings in Game 2.

The Hillsboro swim team third at a meet at Solomon on Saturday.“It was a good meet for us if you consider we had about half our swimmers there,” coach John Vineski said.Solomon scored 580 and took the top spot, Council Grove followed with 385 and Hillsboro finished with 307.

Pair wins tourney title

Shelley Dunham and Jenny Gihring combined for a one-over-par 36 to win the Hillsboro Ladies Golf Invitational Tournament June 21.

In a scorecard playoff for second place and third place, the team of Vivian Talbott and Teri Wray prevailed over Shirley Meysenburg and Kay Judson. Both teams shot a 38.

In the second flight, Judy Klein and Jane Long of Hillsboro took first with a 42, Rita Brennan and Raye Dirks of Hillsboro followed with a 43 and third place went to Julie Kincaid and Kathy Stuhlsatz with a 43.

In the third flight, Ethelyn Branum and Mary Ann Matthews won with a 45, second went to Opal Whitehair and Dorothy Veach at 52, and Brenda Kimberly and Karlene Lovelady took third after a scorecard playoff at 52.

Atwood lands lake-record catfish

Don’t call him Ishmael. Call him Gene Atwood.

On May 10, Atwood hooked a lake-record 681⁄2-pound flathead catfish at Marion Reservoir.

“My wife and I were trolling for walleye in 22 or 23 feet of water,” he said. “Earlier in the day, my wife and I had been catching small walleye in the shallows, and we decided to go to the deeper area around Cottonwood Point toward French Creek.”

Atwood was using 12-pound test line and a Thunderstick lure.

“We started catching keeper walleyes in that area,” he said. “Then I hooked one that took 35 or 40 minutes to get to the top of the water...
