Hillsboro takes 2nd place at Hesston swim season opener

The Hillsboro swim team opened the 2008 season Saturday at Hesston, scoring 443 points and placing second to Lindsborg (511). Peabody (315) placed third and Hesston (191) finished fourth.

14 & under Hot Rods off to a hot start this summer

The Hot Rods, a Hillsboro-based 14-and-under fastpitch softball team, is off to a fast start this summer with a 19-2-2 record so far. The team has won tournaments in Council Grove and Hillsboro, placed second in a Salina tournament and third in a Clay Center tournament. New summer program will prepare kids for triathlon challenge

Area youth—and their parents—will have the chance to explore a new arena of physical training and competition when the first summer-long “Triple Threat” program takes off on its inaugural run this week.

Amy Ratzlaff, head volleyball coach at Tabor College, and Anna Woods, certified fitness trainer, are organizing the program for children age 7 through 15.

“(Amy) has such a passion for kids’ wellness and fitness,” Woods said. “After the success of The Biggest Loser (weight-loss contest for area adults), we felt we needed to offer something for the younger kids as a challenge for the summer to keep active, to promote family activity and just to help kids get out and do things rather than sit around the house and be bored...

Area marathoners run at OKC

Seven Hillsboro-area runners completed the eighth annual Memorial Marathon and Half-Marathon in Oklahoma City Sunday.

Top marathon finisher of the group was Bob Woelk, who completed the 26.2-mile course in 3:58:49. He placed 75th out of 187 in his age division and 570th out of 1,964 finishers on the cool, windy and sometimes rainy morning. It was his third marathon.

Anna Woods crossed the finish line of her first marathon in 3:59:55 for 31st of 128 in her division. She was 624th overall.

Donna Spoonemore of rural Hillsboro completed the course in 4:01:45, less than a minute from qualifying for the Boston Marathon. She was 12th of 90 in her division and 636th overall.

Tom Leihy, also running his first marathon, ran a 4:21:16 for 125th...
