HRC tennis camps attract 26 youth

Legion posts 1-2 mark at state tourney

Hillboro Legion Post 366 won its first game at the state tournament in Garden City this weekend, 4-2 over the host team Saturday morning. Post 366 did not win a second game and was eliminated by Cimarron River on Sunday.

Even so, coach Tim Hein said the team closed out the year playing its best baseball of the season.

Hillsboro golfers finish first summer league

Michael Padgett and Anthony Thiessen claimed the championship in the first-ever summer men’s league sponsored by the Hillsboro Golf Association. The league of 18 two-man teams competed Wednesday evenings for eight weeks, finishing July 16.

“The response was just tremendous,” said Padgett, who helped organize the tournament. “I think we’re going to have a lot more interest next year, which could be challenging with the 18-team limit.”

The teams played a variety of formats over the eight-week span, including alternate shot, scramble, best ball and match play. The top six teams, in order, were Scott O’Hare and Ric Johnson, Bill Manuel and Lonnie Hamm, Jay Kimberly and Phil Thiessen, John Knaak Jr. and John Knaak Sr., and...

Swim team gives awards

The Hillsboro swim team handed out its post-season awards for the most improved and highest scoring swimmers in each class, as well as two “Coaches Awards” for outstanding effort and dedication to the sport and to the team.

Girls “High Point” awards went to Sonja Jost (8 & under), Emily Sechrist (9-10), Maddie Duerksen (11-12), Lindsey Brazil (13-14) and Courtney Fast (15-18). Boys “High Point” awards went to Braden Vogt (8 & under), Franklin Jost (9-10), Jacob Humber (11-12), Shaq Thiessen (13-14) and Brandon McMillen (15-18).
